Mishawaka (Indiana) Police Department press release:
On Monday, December 22, 2014 at approximately 1:10 am Mishawaka Police were dispatched to the 200 block of S. Hill Street in reference to an unwanted person violating a protective order. The unwanted person was identified as Joshua Ringle 23 years old. Mishawaka Police Officers attempted to stop Ringle who was driving a black SUV and refused to stop. Officers chased Ringle north on Main Street toward Michigan and called the chase off due to high speeds and safety of our citizens.

Mishawaka Police received a tip that Joshua Ringle was in the area of 1500 Liberty Drive at approximately 11:35 am. When the Detectives arrived on Liberty Drive Joshua Ringle took off on foot with officers chasing him. Ringle was observed on Lowell Wood West by officers who attempted to stop him again. Ringle while fleeing police entered a home on Lowell Wood confronted the homeowner and took her gray Subaru Forrester. Ringle drove through the lowered garage door refusing to stop for officers. Ringle drove east on Lowell to Liberty turned left onto Liberty with officers pursuing. Ringle continued north on Grape Road through Edison Rd. where Officers called off the pursuit after losing sight of him due to heavy holiday traffic.

Officers were informed by dispatch that witnesses called stating the gray SUV had been involved in a rollover crash at Grape Rd. and Douglas. The gray SUV rolled over ending upright on its wheels and left west on Douglas.

Shortly after this crash officers were informed that the gray SUV and a male subject matching the disruption of Joshua Ringle were in the Library parking lot at the University of Notre Dame. While looking for Ringle an officer was informed that he was near the administrative building.

The officer was able to make contact with Ringle and attempted to apprehend him, but Ringle took off running from the officer. Ringle ran north from the administrative building into the lake (St. Mary’s) at approximately 12:09 pm. Officers on scene tried talking Joshua Ringle out of the lake but Ringle refused. Ringle told officers that he had a gun and he would shoot. Ringle told officers he wanted to die.

A police negotiator tried talking Ringle out of the water while an officer threw a throw bag to Ringle to help pull him to shore. Ringle refused to grab the rope numerous times. Notre Dame Fire Department was able to place a boat in the water with officers on board in case it was needed. Due to the time Ringle spent in the water and concerns for his health since Ringle would not grab the rope the boat was used to get Ringle out of the water and take him to shore.

Ringle was taken into custody without incident and immediately provided medical attention due to hypothermia. Ringle was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The campuses of Bethel College and Notre Dame were placed on lock down for safety reasons.

I think I saw this movie...

A commenter on an Indiana gun board said the execution of the procedures for dangers person/lock down was less than stellar. The pond where the chase ended about 200 yards from the Notre Dame powerplant and the people working there were unaware there was a problem until someone's wife called after seeing live news reports. The official announcement didn't reach the plant until after Bruce Willis...err... Joshua Ringle was pulled out of the pond.

Eliminated, however briefly, the possibility of an officer or innocent bystander being injured or killed during the chase.
