I just wonder why it took so long to understand the concept.

There was a period in our history when laws against carrying guns were a good idea.
The West was tamed. We had a society that was peaceful to a large extent.
Today this has changed. Terrorist threats are on the loose. Our society puts pressures on
us that are in excess of what we are built to take. There were no school shootings now the
schools have turned into kill zones.

Yet some fools still think that a law will protect them. I often wonder how many laws the
"Colombine kids" broke before the first shots were fired. Armed staff could have stopped
the tragic incident much faster and saved some lives :leaving

I don't know if I would say it was ever a great idea, but people blamed the problems on the guns anyway.

I always laugh at the western movie sheriffs like Earp and their insistence in disarming the citizens. History holds these types in high regard. Me, not so much. The seeds of tyranny were sewn through their actions.

tommyg,

"There was a period in our history when laws against carrying guns were a good idea.

The West was tamed."

You can't be serious?

The west was tamed meaning all criminals were rounded up and in prison?

Wild animal attacks were completely halted? Nope, no bears, mountain lions, etc. to fear as they went the way of the buffalo?

I could go one, but I'm sure you get my drift...

Laws against carrying guns is quite a liberal idea, benefitting no one.

Plus, I have far less fear of a terrorist attack in the U.S. than I do the thriving criminal element we read about daily.

The disarming had an awful lot to do with Jim Crow, and disarming former slaves.

I agree, but I think there was more to it. I also think that it was used by carpet baggers and carpet bagger politicians to keep the Rebel soldiers/sympathizes in line after they lost the war. A lot of the carpetbaggers operated under the assumption that to the winner goes the spoils. What better way for northern politicians to reconstruct the South, than to disarm the southern people who were defeated and devistated by war?

There has never been such a time when laws against carrying guns were a good idea, and their never will be, as long as human beings inhabit this planet. The nature of human beings is constant, and people are just as good or evil as they've always been.

No school shootings? Your US history has been sanitized by our media and our schools. In 1927 the worst mass murder of school children in the US occurred in Bath, Michigan, killing 38 elementary school children. No, it wasn't a "shooting," it was worse...a bombing.

Bombs were pretty popular in the first 30 years or so of 20th century America. In 1910 someone blew up the LA Times newspaper building killing 21. There has always been violence in this country. The old days were no time of peace and tranquility.

The earliest school shooting in the US occurred in 1760. The teacher and 10 students were killed.

School shootings have occurred ever since, in the early years, mostly students killing their teachers. It happened about once a year from 1850 to 1900. It happened about 50 times between 1900 and 1920, more than four times the rate of the previous 50 years. It's been constant throughout US history. There are probably fewer this century, though I haven't checked the numbers.
