I am beginning a build. So far, I have a stripped lower and a CMC trigger group. I can get a mil-spec extension and all the detents, springs and such but beyond that, I need to make foundational decisions...lol.
Gas system will decide buffer and narrow down barrels...then feedramps or lack thereof on the barrel will dictate uppers to a certain extent.
I have pretty much decided that I am going carbine length on the gas system as losing two inches on the gas system is supposed to increase felt recoil slightly...but I am shortening the barrel by two inches also over the M16 I used in the service. My thinking is felt recoil on a 5.56 isn't significant anyway do a minor difference isn't a big deal.
Now all this is just my thinking but I haven't fired or worked with this platform in 20 years...lol.
My question now is that I get diehards on both sides of the coin as to chrome lined barrel over a melonite treated. It's almost akin to the glock/1911 debate...lol.
What say y'all?
And if I am way offbase as to carbine vs mid, let me know and why.

Re: Chrome lined or Melonite?
This will be just a general purpose gun.
Our M16s were wore-out, used and abused along side being 15 years old at the time and I still never missed the black at 500 on the B-mod targets. A new rifle assembled of quality parts should get in the same neighborhood even with only 16" worth of barrel and a carbine gas system. Am I off base? I am not expecting 2 inch groups at 500 but it should perform ok I think.

i think this is one of those questions where you will continue to get different answers. myself i have a couple that are nitride and i have no issues with them and have put 1k's of rounds through them and they are very accurate. some people say go chrome or go home others say nitride/melonite are more accurate and last longer. actually myself i dont think you will probably find any fault either way you go

I just bought 2 complete 16" uppers for builds I'm about to do with my grand kids. They are Chrome Moly Vanadium Nitride treated.
Obviously I haven't shot them yet, but I have looked them over closely and everything looks very good. They have full auto bolt carriers with properly staked gas keys, just to name a couple of things.
They were a good value at $319 each. The shipping was reasonable and very fast!

I do like those prices but they don't have very comprehensive data on their barrels...what are the gs port sizes? what is the diameter at the gas block? who makes their barrels?
