SUPPLEMENTAL FIREARM INSURANCE QUESTION
I am researching adding some extra insurance to cover the collection. What kind of experience have you had with this. My insurance company (USAA) wants a list of every serial number / make / model and mfg date. Not any big deal, I just feel funny giving all of that info out. Especially since there have been some posts about USAA leaning toward the anti side. What do you think, any suggestions for other options?

In a way I can understand why they might need this info.
BUT do they have the same info on your TV's, computers, refrig. and such? My insurance company does not require it unless there is a claim.
I have pictures along with model and seriel numbers of everything in my house thats worth anything. I keep one set in my safe (fire prof for 2 hours) and another copy is in my parents safe just in case.

If that company is leaning toward the dark side, I would be hesitant to divulge any detailed information, and seek alternative (contents and belongings) insurance...
I would also recommend keeping this information, and other insurable data (copy), in an off-site secure location, just in case...

A video from a digital camera, showing all of your guns at once along with a paper list of serial numbers was good enough for my insurance. Just keep you video and serial number list up to date and store it some place away from your house. The video and list can be stored electonically on a server away from your home ot another computer or CD. I talked with my insurance agency and he had me just raise the contents amount on the house as the most cost effective way of insuring my gun collection.
Good luck
PS: The video is also a good way to show your scopes, bases, slings, etc with out having to make a comprehensive list. Dont forget your reloading equipment, components and ammo stash. All of that costs money to replace.

My insurance is with Farmers, and I have added additional coverage for firearms and woodworking power tools. They never asked me for any serial numbers. They did recommend (not insist) that I make a video tape of everything.

Yeah. One of my friends went on a beer run and returned to find his apartment building on fire and everything he owned was totally destroyed except his car and the clothes he was wearing.pbandjelly wrote:I have all the pics on my comp, but, I guess I need to keep a seperate list elsewhere as well.
The point being that you need off-site storage of important documents.
He didn't have renter's insurance, either.

well some you know that my EX-Wife's home was broke in to and she had a dollar amount only policy, and you need to keep photo's or boxes of the idea's you want replaced as they will not give you anything that you don't have a receipt , or Pictures of. she had over 3K in rings and other jewelery taking and they are only giving her 500.00 for it all as she didn't have a picture of most of it .
as for Guns ,get a good picture of it and with the SN# showing if you got it from a Dealer save the receipt or get one from the guy you are baying it from.
I hope this helps and keep it in Safety deposit box or in safe .
most of her records where on her laptop and that was one of the ideas taking.
