Off-Campus University Carry

Post by TVegas »

Howdy guys,

I came across a somewhat confusing portion of the Student Conduct Code of my university. I was wondering what you all feel it means and how you believe it applies to carrying off-campus at university-sponsored events.

I already have my opinion, but I want to get y'all's too!

"24.4.14. Weapons and explosives. Illegal or unauthorized use, possession of fireworks or explosive, other weapons, or dangerous chemicals on University premises or at any University-sponsored activity or use of any such item, even if legally possessed, in a manner that harms, threatens or causes fear to others is prohibited. Illegal or unauthorized use or storage of any weapon. The term weapon may be defined as any object or substance designed to inflict a wound, cause injury or pain, or to incapacitate. Weapons may include, but are not limited to, all firearms, pellet guns, tasers, stunguns, slingshots, martial arts devices, switchblade knives and clubs."

Also, I plan to appeal to the university to remove automatic knives from the list of weapons.

why don't they just say what you are allowed to have?

I find it entertaining they are so concerned about explosives and dangerous chemicals, but they allow cars with gallons of gas in the parking lot.

They should also ban most things in a spray can since most of those use butane or other flammable gas.

Under current law it is illegal to carry at a school sponsored event anyway. Even if they didn't write this it would still be illegal.

I also enjoy that it essentially says that as long as those things are not used "in a manner that harms, threatens or causes fear to others", then it is not prohibited. Unfortunately, it's not a big deal to the university since they get to interpret it however they please.

Since this qualifier appears: " in a manner that harms, threatens or causes fear to others ", it looks to me that possession, use, etc of all those things is prohibited only if you are harming, threatening, or causing fear to others. IOW, if it is concealed and no one knows you have it, then it is not forbidden by the policy. I sorta doubt that's what they meant, but I think that's what it says.

Absolutely! I understand the legal rules, but just wanted y'all's opinion on the student conduct code itself.

I would agree with this interpretation.
