If they are recording information, they are pulling a fast one.koine2002 wrote: . . . Anyway, Dallas City Hall isn't trying to pull any fast ones with CHL holders.

Re: Great experience at Dallas City Hall
I get mixed signals about whether or not it's legal to carry in a building that includes a court. A sheriff's deputy recently told me that a lot of court houses have barriers between the rest of the building and the court area. In those buildings you're probably OK outside of the portion of the building used for the court.
In buildings that do not separate the court facilities from the rest of the structure, you can't carry anywhere in the building.
I may have misunderstood, but it sounded like if the building were "apportioned" into separate areas for the court and non-court uses, you could carry.
I'm confused. Where does the law stand on carry in a building that is used for many purposes, including a court?

No information should be recorded. Collected. Saved etc. Especially via a security guard. Show
the CHL, walk in, no problem. write down my DL, CHL numbers and other info.... that's a problem.

I don't believe there are any courtrooms in the Dallas City Hall building.treadlightly wrote:I get mixed signals about whether or not it's legal to carry in a building that includes a court. Fort Worth City Hall practices the same process. If the officer at the front hadn't been so delightful and I wasn't in such I rush I would have pushed the issue, but I was trying to get in and out during lunch.gemini wrote:No information should be recorded. If I ever have a reason to go down there that doesn't require being unarmed I'll push it. I was one of the ones that pushed it at Fair Park and don't have any qualms about doing it again.

Recording such information for what reason?
Demanding that info when I have every right to go in without having all that info being recorded really chaps me off.
And yeah, I can see some of the meek, stating that I'm being unnecessarily difficult, after all the powers that be aren't demanding much. Why don't I go along to get along.
My eye!
You can't tell me city hall is an exception. I don't have to go through this rigamarole anywhere else that it's legal to carry, so why at city hall?
So, that begs the question: Is there some law that states - yes, city hall has every right to demand and record your personal information before letting you in?
If there is no legal right for them to do this: Is this practice one in which they hope to chill the idea of those CHLers who care more about their privacy from carrying into city hall? I'm certain some folks would turn around and leave before letting such info be recorded...I know I would out of principle.
If I were to challenge such, I would leave my pistol locked up in my truck.
I'd hate to see someone challenge this rather unsavory practice, get a contempt of cop situation going and end up in the pokey.
I can imagine if you challenge this practice you're gonna get a percentage of the recorders mightily angry for questioning their author-i-tie!
If you aren't armed, the challenge will probably lessen the chances of going to jail, in my opinion...cuz you ain't arguing with a pistol on your side, providing the recorder with the excuse that you presented a threat once things heated up...

Re: Great experience at Dallas City Hall
So, those with encyclopedic knowledge of the law, please speak up.
Is the having to stop, fork over your personal information at city hall, have it recorded something you can simply walk past or do you have to comply per some lawful exception I'm unfamiliar with?
Please, you that know, speak up!

Re: Great experience at Dallas City Hall
Is everyone stopped and "ID'd" or is it only persons with a CHL. If everyone is being ID'd and their info taken then there is no problem. If they are doing it selectively, then there is a problem.
Re: Great experience at Dallas City Hall
I see no need for anyone to be stopped and ID'd. It's City Hall. Pay a water bill, buy one of various occupational licenses etc .MeMelYup wrote:Is everyone stopped and "ID'd" or is it only persons with a CHL. It IS a public building, paid for by the tax payers. It is NOT a courthouse. It is NOT a secure area of a jail. This IS another
reason the state legislature needs to add teeth (fines) to a law that would prevent municipalities from posting 30.06 or trying to collect
personal info from CHL's.
Is this ID policy a Mike Rawlings directive? He's a member of MAIG, correct?
