Dear Forum. Need help with my wife!!

Post by jbenat »

Guys I need help with my wife. I can't convince her to carry with a round in the chamber of her car gun. And if that's not bad enough she keeps it zipped up a pistol case!
Her car gun is a 9mm Baby Desert Eagle with a safety but I can't convince her that if she ever needed her gun it would be awfully hard to unzip and jack a round in the chamber. She also usually keeps her S & W 642 loaded in the glove compartment but she would still have to stretch across the front seat of her Pathfinder, suv to get to it.
Maybe she will listen to reason from you guys. Please post advise for me to show her.

Next time she is in the driveway walk away from the car about 20 feet while she is in it turn to her and tell her (I am a bad guy coming to get you what will you do?) then rush her and open the door and reach in like you are going to drag her out of it.

Don't hurt her or drag her out but show her how fast a person could be on her before she could think about it or react then remind her a bad guy is not going to tell you he is coming.

Thats why you should be loaded and ready.

Practice different scenarios. For example:

Take a rubber (toy) knife, a pair of Airsoft pistols that approximate the actual carry guns you each prefer, and the help of a good friend.

Have her prep her Airsoft the way she carries, and you prep yours the way you carry. Give your friend the rubber knife (and good eye protection), and you and your wife sit in the car, as if you had just arrived "wherever" and were about to get out.

See how each of you meet the "threat" when your friend pops out of nowhere & yanks the car door open.....

Note - if you do this at home, you may want to practice this inside using chairs to simulate the front seat of the car, in case of neighbors who may dial 911 or even pull out their own shotguns if they think the "attack" is real.

You could also try timing her at the range... use a stopwatch to see how long it takes her to bring a hot pistol on target from her pistol case and get a shot off. Have her time you, as well.

All guns have at least two safeties. One's digital, one's cognitive. In other words - keep the digit off the trigger until ready to fire, and THINK. Some guns also have mechanical safeties on top of those. But if the first two don't work, the mechanical ones aren't guaranteed. - me

http://www.corneredcat.com is a great place to visit for all of us.

Don't make her feel that everything she is doing is wrong....it is just different than you. Talk about the situations that might come up and approach it as a conversation instead of you knowing better than her.

Just the opinion of a married fellow that has gone down the same road. She very well might be in her comfort zone and not willing to expand that for a while.

I'm hoping both of you will come to the forum day on Sept. 29. She'll get to meet a lot of other women & can hear it from them.

We would love to go to this event but Friendswood is not exactly around the corner from Frisco. A trip like that would take a lot of co-ordinating and schedule shifting. Maybe someday we will have a little get together up in the N. Texas area.
And thanks for the advise regarding my hard headed wife. When a few more good positive inputs are posted I'll show them to her.

She's welcome to register & PM me anytime.
I carry my guns cocked & locked.
Having shot a bit in IDPA, I have seen how much time drawing from concealment can take. (And remember, the BGs are the ones starting this, and their weapons of choice are already drawn.) There's also the possibility that one hand could be injured or that she's using one hand to fight off attackers while drawing the gun.
GCMontogomery taught several of us (at the 2006 forum day) how to rack the slide using the back of the leg or furniture, but it's one of those worst-case scenario kind of things--not something you want to rely on if you don't have to.
If she keeps the safety on and the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, she'll be fine.
She'll also be ready to protect herself quickly if the round is already in the chamber.
