Obviously over time (230+ years) there have been laws and court rulings that have weakened the original intent of certain aspects of the freedoms those documents and founding fathers meant when they sweated that stuff out in the beginning...

To remove, weaken, make unpalletable the means to encourage the "people" to be empowered to maintain what I believe to be the ultimate check and balance we hear about all the tiime in Govt' 101 classes...At least the one I remember (no telling how those classes are conducted now, I seriously believe I would not pass the class now...) was engaging and informative...

This is one of those potential historical benchmarks we need to be very aware of...

What you do about it is up to the individual, and how committed and understanding they are to the original concepts that formed it all up...

The problem I see is not what you said, it's that I don't think there is anyone left smart enough to write another one like it, to keep the dunderheads from eventually messing it up again...
You, me and the average person like our forefathers are the ones that are smart enough. It's our responsibility to to compel the talking heads in Washington to do the right thing and hold them accountable by holding the one thing over their heads that they fear, THE VOTE.

I for one believe the Constitution is written in stone. It is not a living breathing thing whose meaning changes with the changing of generations because people want to arbitrarily reinterpret it's meaning. The constitution is to be interpreted within the way it was meant during the time period it was written. For those people that throw up the old argument that during the 18th century people believed only white propertied men was the definition of" the people" when the constitution was written, that was taken care of through the amendment process. Hence the 14th amendment and then the 19th amendments.

I know quite a few people that think the same way I do. For those that believe differently I will continue to engage in civil discussion. The one thing I concentrate on during these discussions is the "well I feel" defense which means I'm winning. My wife was a liberal from Chicago. She's not the same person I met 23 years ago.

Unfortunately, I have to dissagree with you on this part of your statement, the elected officials I know pretty good have told me that most liberal politicians are not too concerned about any votes against them anymore for differences of opinion and downright "toss their posteriors out on the street constituents", when election day comes around...Its a sad state of affairs...But of course we still need to stand up and be active, involved and up on the "real" issues...

Bingo...Absolutely!!! Everytime I hear someone say "living breathing document" I want to seriously smack 'em upside the head out of general spite! I know for a fact a smack in this day and age, the reaction of the people cooking this baby up would have done way far worse than smacking someone upside the noggin'...

Civil discussions, sure...Just don't say the bad words that'll get ya smacked...My wife was the same way...We are still a work in progress, and getting her this far on our side of the aisle has been a very interesting trip...I got her into paying attention to what she sees in the news media, got her into guns! Yippee! And she's coming along just fine on the new issues, where I don't have to go far to see where she really is on illegal immigration, the threat of gun-control, feeling comfortable talking to elected officials, etc etc...

Between you and me, the entire fight is still worth it...And we might have a few folks on our side to lean on from time to time...
