IIRC, one difference is the Gen3 does NOT allow you to clip the dustcover onto the bottom, whereas Gen2 does. Also, the Gen3 will wobble a touch more in some rifles than other, supposedly due to enhanced compatibility. Can't speak personally on the last part, just what I've read. Also have read the polymer is a touch better. Haven't seen complaints of reliability being a factor in either.
