So reading a book that includes a Barrett M82. At one point a person watches the user "slot the magazine into the breech". I've never heard that phrase and it doesn't seem appropriate. So,
1. Is it appropriate and I'm mistaken?
2. What is a better way to describe the action taken?
Into the breech?

Into the breech?
It's fine if you disagree. I can't force you to be correct.

A pistol without a round chambered is an expensive paper weight.

Re: Into the breech?
In my mind a breech is where you load the shell in a cannon! Magazine goes into the well, cartridge is loaded into the chamber, maybe I'm wrong but that's what I would think

Re: Into the breech?
The simple definition of breech is "the back of the gun where it is loaded." https://www.thefreedictionary.com/breech
Pistol, rifle, cannon.

Re: Into the breech?
I'm no expert on firearms by the standards of this board, but I do have 7 book published and think I got an idea about writing. I'd say "slotting the magazine into the breech" is, at best, clumsy.
By the definition of "the back of the gun where it is loaded," it is still technically incorrect. The magazine is placed into the magazine well, where a cartridge is now in position to be loaded into the breech.
Just my opinion. If somebody smarter disagrees, I won't argue.

Re: Into the breech?
I agree for a Barrett or similar weapon a magazine is inserted into the mag well. The top round then is position to be fed into the breech. I wasn't sure if there might be a better way to express it. Thanks for the input so far.

Re: Into the breech?
It’s been a couple decades since I’ve fired one. As I recall, you insert the mag and release the bolt to load a round in the chamber.
