Home carry
Talking w/ my Mom last night & one of her coworkers neighbor was working in their yard. Went in the house for a short rest, "gone less than 30 minutes" and when returned, lawn mower, edger, & several power tools gone. They left the garage door up. I know many of you carry on your person at your house. This has been one of my thinking points for some time. At present I do not put it on to mow the yard but will not pull it off to work in the garage or loading room. Summer sweat is really tough. I do know that home invasion is more probable than many other asaults. Looks like I will start as some of you do, put it on with my pants when my feet hit the floor. If I refuse to be a victim in the public arena, I sure refuse to be one in my home. How many of you carry at home? Until you go to bed? Mine is in reach while I sleep.

Carry 24-7 or guess right.

Carry 24/7 means 24/7. Don't get caught with your pants down. In other words, don't get caught without your firearm. Never.

I carry at home. I believe the probability of needing to defend/protect yourself, family or property is greater at home. The simple reason being, that's where we are most of the time, especially at night when the animals come out.
Theft is always a concern as well. Thieves drive around looking for open garage doors and equipment left unatended in yards. On any given day how many pickup trucks do you see with lawn equipment in them? Welders, compressors, bikes, etc, etc. I imagine that some of that is likely stolen.
I've got an automatic garage door attendant. It's a device that automatically closes the garage door after no motion has been detected for the amount of time you designate. I have it set real short. If I am working in the yard and need in and out of the garage repeatedly then I just carry the opener in my pocket.
Anytime I open a door to the outside, be it front, back, or garage, I am ready for a confrontation. Call me paranoid if you want, I call it prepared.

I do not carry a gun on my person when I am home...it would be hard to get a 1911 into my boxer briefs! I am never more than twenty feet from a firearm (I know that is a long long way during an assault). While sleeping I have an audible alarm set on all entrances and have a handgun in reach. I have a one hundred and ten pound puppy that would love to eat an uninvited guest

I think paranoia has nothing to do with it. Instead of boxers, try lightweight pj bottoms. They have pockets. I keep a Kel-tec P3AT in mine. It goes in as I get up from the kin size bed. 40 S&W or 45 on the nightstand. Wife's 38 on hers. Shotgun in the closet. Once up and dressed, the bigun goes on the waist. If I am at home, unless crawling around under a vehicle or other activities, always have main and backup. In the hot tub? Pistol on the edge. In the pool? Pistol by the towel. In the chair readin paper? Pistol on the table.
I figure if I am going to be robbed/assaulted/mugged, it will be at home. If I am out for a walk, and a dog approaches, the pistol is ready too. I have no qualms about dropping a dog either.

I don't consider home carry parinoid. Prepared is the right word HiV. It is time to make the transition in the mid size town of Lufkin. We live in a virtually crime free area. Just seems to be happening now, so the decision has been made. At home too.

Carry 24-7 or guess right.

Re: Home carry
When I roll out of bed and slip on pants or shorts, I automatically pull one of the Kel-Tec mouse pistols from under my pillow to drop in my pocket. When I depart from the house, I up it to a 9mm with an extra magazine. 24/7 always.longtooth wrote: How many of you carry at home? Until you go to bed?

I have seen that acted out about fifty times...and for the most part it is true, BUT
You skipped the part about my dog
I would bet you money that she could keep anyone busy....at least long enough to get to my handgun, shotgun, rifle....or whatever I am in the mood to grab. I think it is great that you guys carry at home...I agree with you when it comes to walking the dog....I do the same. I have been in a situation that required me to retrieve a handgun in my home before...I had no problem getting to it and ended up resolving the situation without needing to fire the weapon (long story). We all carry to protect ourselves and our families and I think it is our responsibility and right to define when that is appropriate.

Gentlemen,
The uninitiated tend to view some of our actions as paranoid. Those not likely to arm themselves often wonder why we carry. I did not intend to label anyone here as paranoid. Prepared is indeed what we need to be.
Yes, man's best friend is a great first defense. I had a canine friend who would die for me, and quite certainly tear an intruder limb from limb. He almost took the arm off a stupid teen who reached in the truck to touch him while the dog and I were sitting in the lot waiting on the wife.
I learned early on that there were times I could not have the dog with me unless he was on lead. This included my front yard. Dogs, even the truly heroic, loving, protective ones, can be incapacitated by those intent on harming us. The same goes for alarm systems, fences, locked doors and windows. and all other barriers we place between us and them.
What good is situational awareness and preparation if you are unarmed around your house?
Thanks for listening!

Anygun,
I hope for no reason that you feel I find your actions paranoid...I do not and never stated that I did. I make the personal choice to keep a gun near me and not on my person when I at my residence. I do however feel that it is a personal choice that can only be made by an individual and his/her set of circumstances! I feel that if someone WANTS to carry a gun at home or in the shower or surgically attached to their skin.....it is their right and I respect that. We are on the same side here and I am pro CHL to the bone! Have a great evening.
