Before you go buy any A-5s go to the Browning website and download the serial number history and other pertinent info regarding these shotguns. I have quite a few including an A-5 magnum in near perfect condition that I picked up for a steal. There are lots of A-5s in local pawn shops. Some are in deplorable shape with variable chokes installed etc. Some came with variable chokes, I believe, but I know little about those.
I was in the Cabela's in Gonzalez. LA last night and there were 8-9 A-5s for sale on the used rack varying in price from $399-$799. I did not have my serial number reference with me but I will have it this evening when I visit. I have two a-5s from the late 1930s.
Look around for the deals. I have not paid more than $185 for any of my Brownings. The $185 gun was the 12 Magnum. Lots of the older A-5s have cracked forestocks. This is a trait of the design and I do not let it stop me from buying them. The seller may not know this so play it up as "damaged goods" and low ball the offer.
I really want a Sweet 16 but they command big bucks. If you find one, buy it. Be careful, because Browning made a standard 16 ga. The Sweet 16 has "Sweet 16" on the receiver. I have had several standard 16s shoved at me as Sweet 16s and the shover was very disappointed when I informed them what they had.
