WASHINGTON, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Two people, including the gunman, were killed in the in Sunday's shooting at a Church in Colorado Springs, Colo., police said.

Colorado Springs police chief Richard Myers told a news conference that four other people were hospitalized and some of them have life-threatening injuries.

The gunman, who hasn't been identified, was shot dead by a church security officer, Myers said.

He said several suspicious devices were also located, and police and fire crews have been doing a methodical building by building search.

Meyers said the police received a 911 call at about 1:10 p.m. (2010 GMT) about the shooting in the New Life Church and arrived at the scene within minutes.

Law enforcement officials confirm that simple pyrotechnic devices were found in a suspect vehicle.

"It's a sad day and a tragic day in Colorado Springs," said Colorado Springs Mayor Lionel Rivera.

"They came to church to worship, what happened today was a tragedy," said pastor of the New Life Church, Brady Boyd.

"It's unfortunate that we live in a society where this happens, but it does," he told reporters.

This is the second such shooting in Colorado in the same day.

Police in the Denver suburb of Arvada said two people were killed and two others were wounded when a lone gunman opened fire at a training center for Christian missionaries early in the morning. The gunman is still at large.

The shooting occurred at about 12:30 a.m. (730 GMT) at the Youth With a Mission center.

About 50 people were in the center when the gunman opened fire.

Colo. Governor Bill Ritter issued a statement in response to the two shootings.

"Today, Colorado mourns the tragic loss of those killed and injured in two senseless shootings. Our deepest sympathies go out to the families of those who were taken from us, and we pray for the speedy recovery of those who were wounded," he said.

The governor said he have activated the Colorado Information Analysis Center, and have directed the Department of Public Safety, Colorado State Patrol and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to provide immediate assistance to the local and federal agencies investigating the shootings.

there were 2 shootings in CO churches... not sure if they were related... but this is truly disturbing.

It's really sad that people target places people go for faith and unity , I am grateful that in the second incident the church had enough foresight to have armed security on site , something the gunman wasn't expecting.

Colorado website has a couple more details:
The gunman was shot and killed by a female member of the church's armed security staff, the source said.

Good for her.

Interesting; apparently some of the reports are claiming that the police have a suspect in custody.
Colorado Springs Police Lt. Fletcher Howard said police had a suspect in custody, but that the motive for the shooting was not yet known. He said he could not confirm any fatalities from the shootings.

I believe the suspect in custody is the scum who shot the people at the first incident

It may be interesting to see how this shakes out:

The gunman was killed by an armed security volunteer at the church before police arrived, authorities said. The gunman's name was not released. Officers found several smoke-generating devices on the church campus; their intended purpose wasn't clear.

Boyd said the security guard rushed the attacker, who didn't get more than 6 feet inside the building, and "took him down in the hallway."

"She probably saved 100 lives," Boyd said of the guard. The gunman, he added, "had a lot of ammunition to do a lot of damage."

Pastor Brady Boyd said security at the church had been boosted after news of the shooting earlier Sunday in Arvada. The gunman in Arvada had fled before authorities reached the scene.

"Although we are grieving today for the loss of two lives, hundreds of lives were saved yesterday because of the plans that were set in place," Boyd said

In other words a lot of people were spared becase they upped their security , i wish it would of said due to the security we always have in place the badguy made a huge mistake in his judgement . This goes to show just because somebody has a rifle and lots of ammo , he can be stopped in an expeditious manner.

It's a bit off topic, but I think I've found the common thread the recent shootings. Other than not mentioning that the area was a "gun-free zone," the media ALWAYS includes the following line:

"Neighbors described [insert shooter's name] as a loner and as someone who was very quiet and didn't talk to neighbors."

I would like to know the lady's actual currrent "status". One report stated that she was a former LEO, or had LEO training. Was she currently a "card carrying" LEO, or was she carrying strictly as a private citizen, or former leo (national) certification? Was she acting strictly as a "volunteer" as a member of the church? Several media outlets are only stating that she was a "security guard" and some are using the term "church security staff". If she was, in fact, acting as a volunteer - meaning private citizen - then this is, or should be a real boost to the image of 2A rights and those of us that follow all the "rules".

Seeing an interview on cnn.com, the lady was described as "volunteer security" and "highly trained".

The murderer was described as wearing body armor... and it sounded like the volunteer security handled the situation in an extremely quick and professional manner... so I'd guess she really is highly trained. Hard to say where she got her training from though.
