Why you need more than one weapon

Of course, I'm obviously the minority around here, owning only one gun. Maybe I'll invest in a shotgun for better home protection some day.

By the way, my daughter made me extremely proud. She listened very carefully about range safety and how to handle that pistol. She turned out to be a very good shot. Now I feel better about having the gun in the house with a teenager... whew.
You really need to think about investing in at least one more weapon. Why? No firearm is perfect (not even a Glock). If you have to send it for repairs, what are you going to do then?

The shotgun is a good idea. You can have fun with it, too. You can find used shotguns for not much more than $100, and beat-up .38 Special revolvers for less than $200 (police surplus).

Congratulations on getting your daughter interested.

Well, another reason to have a backup is not breakage, but stoppage. The quickest way to clear a malfunction, even if the gun is working, is to draw a second working gun. This includes such things as fail to feed, fail to extract, and lack of ammo.

But, I can see how you can be satisfied with one gun. I would choose a 1911 over a Glock if I had just one, but to each his own.

Not to hijack too much - but where do you find sub $200 .38 spl revolvers that are reliable yet inexpensive? I've been on the lookout and haven't seen them - appreciate a link/source.

Thanks!

I have seen several S&W Chiefs for under $200 at shows. My GF has one with about a 1/3d of the nickel worn off she paid $175 for. Not real pretty but shoots great.

Here's one, $151.99: http://www.auctionarms.com/search/displ ... um=8572432

I found about 20 current auctions for revolvers under $200 on AuctionArms. You have to pay $20-30 for shipping and another $20 or so to the receiving FFL, so I just add $50 to the auction price.

You can use this site as a guide to prices that you can negotiate at pawn shops, etc.

Congratulations of the purchase of your Glock 19. You have purchased a quality and reliable handgun. Not every one who has a CHL is a gun collector or even enjoys shooting as a hobby. Don't worry about buying another. Take care of the one you have and practice with it.

In the future, if you feel the need to buy another go ahead. I would rather own one quality gun than a dozen pieces of junk.

I appreciate your comment. I feel very comfortable with my weapon and wear it all day every day at home for now. (I work at home) I look forward to carrying out in the real world soon. I have to admit, I don't like disarming when leaving my home.

I see your point, but I'm not interested in carrying more than one gun. I've ordered dummy rounds for my Glock to practice clearing a malfunction at the range, and I hope that will be sufficient if the need ever arises. I also plan on carrying an extra mag, as I see that as the most likely culprit if there is a malfunction.

There are other reasons to own backups, besides breakage or the "New York reload" (grabbing a second gun).

First: your wife and teenage daughter have both shown themselves capable of shooting well and practicing gun safety. Even if you have a big "S" on your chest it doesn't make you Superman; what happens to them if you go down in a fight, or if you get separated? Why leave them without their own guns for defense?

Second: if you are ever involved in a shooting, your pistol will be taken into evidence. If you should ever have a bad police encounter (especially out of state), you might have trouble getting your gun back at the end of the encounter. Whether it's legitimate or not, a gun in police custody does you no good. A Hi-Point in hand is a better gun than an Ed Brown in the evidence locker.

Third: guns are a good vehicle for savings. They don't usually appreciate, but they hold their value well. They're easily convertible to cash. In emergencies, they rapidly appreciate in value.

You don't have to own more than one gun, and you don't have to apologize to this group if you don't. But there are plenty of good reasons to own more than one, so you're fully justified in spending the money if you have it.

Also a good reason to have more than one license.

That only works if you carry a handgun that works right out of the box, like a Glock.
