LEO's off Duty Vehicle-Theft of "equipment"

Most CHL/LEO contacts are positive, how about yours? Bloopers are fun, but no names please, if it will cause a LEO problems!

Off-duty officer's truck, equipment stolen

Stacia Willson
KENS 5 Eyewitness News
Police say an off-duty officer's pickup truck was stolen from a Northwest Side business parking lot.

Thousands of dollars worth of police equipment and bullets were taken.

The truck was stolen Tuesday night, and police are concerned the equipment in the wrong hands could be deadly.

Police are looking for a white Ford F-150 truck stolen from the All-Stars gentleman's club parking lot sometime after 10 p.m.

Reports show the 14-year veteran patrolman had more than just personal belongings inside. The thief made off with the officer's badge, radio, uniform and large amounts of ammunition.

"It's not the kind of ammunition somebody just can't go buy at a Wal-Mart or somewhere else, Academy, its just regular ammunition," Trevino said.

But Trevino says the perpetrator wasn't necessarily after any kind of police equipment.

"We have officers who have they're vehicle's burglarized and sometimes an ID will get stolen or a uniform may get stolen because it was in the vehicle, but we don't have a lot of problems with those being used in any other crime," he said.

He also says these types of incidents are few and far between, and there is currently no policy against carrying police equipment in their personal vehicles.

"It doesn't make it excused, we would rather those things not be in the car, but when it happens, we need to make sure we document it correctly and we're out there to try to find it," Trevino said.

Police are still looking for the truck, which has the license plate number 28C-KY4.

Actually, I believe he said it was just regular ammunition. He kinda used a double negative to say it though.

He said that it is NOT the kind you COULDN'T buy at Wal-Mart, i.e., it IS the kind you CAN buy at Wal-Mart. It is not the clearest sentence structure in the world, but it gets the meaning across if read carefully. His daily reports must make a changeling read.

Ya know, I'll bet the BG brings everything back as soon as he discovers he doesn't have the "special" ammo!

Ya think!

Ok, first let me state I'm no prude. In my youth I was known to frequent gentleman's clubs before they were called gentleman's clubs. Now that I'm older and my thought processes have changed, it would seem to me that as a servant of the public one should exercise better judgment than to hang out in these joints. Every one that has either seen or read about the activities going on in these businesses please raise your hands. It seems to me that common sense dictates that though there are things that one can legally do should be avoided as it would cast you in a poor light with the general public.

Sorry for the enigmatic silence. I made the initial mistake of reading too quickly and processing stupid. I edited my remarks but left the head scratch. I think that the syntax is interesting. At either rate, this is just bad reporting outside of bad grammar. Though, I'm not someone to judge either.

I was curious about the equipment lost. Though it's clear ammo was stolen...I wonder if a duty weapon was also? He was at a "gentleman's club" I believe. Does anyone want to hazard a guess if they are 51% Did he in fact have one on his person in the club or did he leave it in his personal vehicle....just speculation unfortunately. :nono:

I'll hazard a guess that he was armed when he went in, in addition to weapons left in the vehicle. Most cops stay armed all the time and don't even think about where they are headed.

And, contrary to some of the posters, I don't see anything wrong with a police officer going to a gentleman's club when he is off duty. I don't see that it is anyone's business but his, unless there is some other problem there. He is a citizen and may want to have a life other than being a cop 24 hours. It is neither illegal nor immoral by community standards, so I don't see why he could not go there.

As with other citizens, I have to point out that he was stupid for leaving all of that gear in the truck though. Cars get broken into in parking lots, especially at clubs where the noise covers the sound of the car glass breaking. If you will not need it while you are shopping or clubbing or whatever, leave it home. I think car burglaries is really the biggest argument I have with 30.06 signs. Forcing people to leave thier pistol in their car is just asking for more break-ins.

I have no problem with him going to a gentlemen's club, but if he's going to do that, or go anywhere that has a higher crime figure than say a krispy kreme, he shouldn't have all that equipment on him

Not to make light, but it was one of the "finer" gentlemens clubs of San Antonio... Anyway, the situation says to me the LEO went there directly after duty or shortly thereafter. I don't carry in my vehicle for that very reason. My opinion: Stop by the house and drop your equipment off, it is you livelihood after all. I think the reporters were trying to make something out of the ammunition and the LEO was trying to dismiss the alarmism. :cheers2:
