Canadian Gun hotline rings up arrests, nets weapons

Police have made four arrests and seized seven firearms thanks to tips to a special Crime Stoppers hotline.

Ottawa police launched the gun hotline after wrapping up their gun amnesty program Feb. 15.

Staff Sgt. Mike Callaghan, who has been leading the city's firearms task force, said the hotline has received about a dozen calls.

Restricted handguns and long guns have been seized, Callaghan said.

Police have been pleased with programs designed to crack down on illegal gun activity. The 21-day gun amnesty brought in 506 firearms, including 118 handguns.

Police also collected ammunition and replica guns.

None of the firearms were reported stolen.

Police also hope to design a pamphlet describing the tip line to citizens, Callaghan said.

The line allows people to report illegal firearms in exchange for cash. The city has provided $100,000 for rewards. Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.
