How long before expiration can renewal be sent in?

My CHL expires this year.

I'm not too busy right now and I could probably take a class more easily than if I wait. My birthday's in the fall and I tend to get more and more busy as the year wears on...

As nearly as I can tell, the passport photos must be taken within 6 months of application, and the proficiency certificate can't be older than 2 years.

But that only tells how old they can be when I send in the application--it doesn't tell how soon I can send in an application.

Does the passport photo have to be less than 6 months old when I send the application in? Or does it have to be less than 6 months old when the expiration date of my license actually rolls around?

Or is there another requirement that I haven't found that limits how soon I can send in an application?

You must be within six months of your expiration date before you can renew and the certificate of training, the TR100, is good for six months from the date you take the class.

You should recieve letter from the DPS six months before your birthdate with instructions on how to get your renewal packet.

If you mail it in 3 months early, will your renewal start on the date you current license expires? Or do you in essence lose 3 months of licensing?

DPS will issue the new CHL and it will have the correct expiration date; i.e. your birthday 5 years later. However, DPS correctly views the renewal as being "issued" on the expiration date of your previous CHL, they simply don't make you wait to get your new license. This is important for NICS exemption purposes.

I've wondered about this. I've been walking around with two valid permit in my a wallet for a month or so. I guess I should put away the new one, but if i do, I'll forget about on my birthday next month.
