So, I guess it's possible to be "made"
Wow, quite a little circus caused by some version of a Secret Service agent letting his gun show in Chicago. I happened to be in Chicago and this was pretty big news. Did it make it nationally? There are several versions floating around, so you can google it, but basically, the officer let his gun show, possibly to the ticket agent, asked some questions (or was voluntarily provided info) on metal detectors in the station, and then boarded a train. Someone reported a man on the train with a gun and they stopped the train and unloaded everyone at gunpoint and searched everything. One version has it that the SS agent identified himself to the officers doing the searching and then began assisting them in the search before someone put 2+2 together and got at least 3.9.

Another forum I frequent had a poster start a new thread about it. He claimed he was on the train when it occurred and he was furious that he and his articles were searched without a warrant. He didn't know why the search was happening, but he was terrified by all the "assault weapons" (his words) the officers were carrying.

sounds to me like he should not have said anything unless he was asked or when he encountered a metal detector.

Well, like I said, there are various versions. The one most positive to the SS agent, said that when he reached for his wallet, he could see that he exposed his weapon and that the ticket agent saw it. At that point, he informed the guy that he was a LEO and the ticket agent volunteered the information about no metal detectors w/o any question from the SS agent. Other versions say that he told the guy he had a gun but did not identify himself as LEO and then asked about whether there were any metal detectors. Here's a link that more or less covers both sides of the story: agent's side below pic in this link, though it doesn't have the part about the ticket guy volunteering the metal detector info; I think I heard that on tv. Don't know if we'll ever know the truth.XtremeDuty.45 wrote:sounds to me like he should not have said anything unless he was asked or when he encountered a metal detector.
Still confirms that you can start a bit of commotion by the failure to conceal. Note I don't think this would have been illegal from a CC standpoint, per the "intentionally failed to conceal" standard, but it can put a bit of a disruption into your day.

Which brings up the question. Do you have your wallet on the same side as your CC?

I have started carrying my wallet on the opposite side, just to be safe; the last thing I want is some girly man behind me in the store to start shreiking like a little school girl
if he happens to get a look at the hardware while I am reaching for my wallet.

I switch sides when I'm carrying, which is whenever legal.

Excellent question! There is no way I can retrieve my keys, wallet, Rolaids or whatever from my right pants pocket when my "heater" is at 3:00 o'clock (1500 hrs. to you GI types) OWB without exposing

Re: So, I guess it's possible to be "made"
I carry at 3 o'clock and keep my wallet in the rear right pocket. Keys in the front right pocket. These are habits I developed long before I started carrying, and I don't think I can change.
When getting my wallet out, I have learned to be a little discrete. I'll slightly move my shirt up with my thumb and then grab the wallet with the thumb and index finger. Never had a problem with an accidental flashing, AFAIK.

What I read in these articles is the issue with Illinois...No such thing as a 'permit/license to carry - concealed or otherwise. That's what got everyone so up in the air.
Check etiquette...wallet is to be carried left rear pocket and I have carried mine there for over 50 years. Carry at 3:00 though.

Same here, I just don't ever feel "concealed" with any OWB holster. Even in winter with a heavy coat the chance of something happening to expose that holster is just to darn easy -but I suspect folks in LEO are just less concerned about it than us average Joes.Oldgringo wrote:There is no way I can retrieve my keys, wallet, Rolaids or whatever from my right pants pocket when my "heater" is at 3:00 o'clock (1500 hrs. to you GI types) OWB without exposingmyself.
OTOH, with an IWB holster that positions my G27 deep in the waistband -it is much harder to detect during a clothing messed up. But its stuff like this that keep smartcarry.com in business

Just look at Lisle's finest standing around in the snow with the ejection ports on their AR's open.
Do ya think the snow is getting in there, melting, and then freezing in the weapon?
In Texas, they would send one deputy to check this out, not the whole Precinct.
