Galveston: Killer at large (update: arrested)

Post by seamusTX »

Galveston, February 21 -- On Friday, teenagers found a woman's corpse in an abandoned house in the 1600 block of 39th Street. The cause of death was not revealed. Police are treating it as a homicide.

Two weeks ago, the partially clothed corpse of a woman who had been strangled was found in a back yard in the 3900 block of Broadway. The locations of the two bodies are less than half a mile apart. Neither is in a sterling neighborhood.

January 17, a woman was found partially clothed, choked, and left for dead in an alley near 22nd and Avenue K. The woman survived with serious injuries, but police have not been able to interview her.

Be careful out there.

Scary. The wife and I have been spending some time down there for Mardi Gras. Reading that makes me want to carry while attending the festivities down there...but then I wouldn't get the complete Mardi Gras experience. Drinking that is...

A tourist is not likely to meet the fate of these unfortunate women, unless she goes slumming. The Mardi Gras venues are policed well enough that the crooks steer clear.

Several years ago, a gang member started shooting at some rival gang members downtown during one of the music festivals. That resulted in the area being secured with metal detectors for several years.

Police are now saying that the three beatings, two fatal, of women in Galveston may be related.

Apparently, all three women were homeless and two had criminal records.

Ya my g/f already got the 'serial killer' scare in her. I don't know who told her that but it must be a rumor going around (and the fact that she scares herself by watching too many horror flicks). "rlol" But, in the event that it is, as Jim already mentioned I beleive the targeted victims are those that are invloved with drugs, prost., etc. On a side note, some one attempted to break into my buddies truck this past friday while we were on the strand so be on the look out. It wouldn't be the first time, he has already had it broken into last semester while working an evening job on the strand, they just busted the passenger window out. :nono:

Vehicle break-ins are far and away the most common serious crime in Galveston. You can't leave anything valuable in the passenger compartment.

In an effort to crack this case, Galveston PD has assigned a task force to search abandoned houses, question homeless people, and arrest those who are breaking the law.

There are many abandoned houses after Ike.

Police yesterday charged one David Ray Williams, 22, of Galveston, with the murder of one of two women who were found beaten to death in February. The charge is based on DNA evidence.

Williams was already in jail. He was arrested on a theft charge shortly after the second murder.

I wonder why serial killers or assassins are always identified by all three names: John Wilkes Booth, James Earl Ray, John Wayne Gacy, Lee Harvey Oswald, Charles Joseph Whitman.... :confused5

I don't know why, but I think one effect is that you are not as likely to get your neighbor with the same first and last name confused with the killer. The examples you gave would not be super-common names but I guess there are cases where the names might be more common, and the chances reasonably good that there are some non-killers out there with the same first and last name.

Newspapers are trying to avoid having another person with a similar name sue them for libel. Such suits are nuisances, but they happen from time to time.

BTW, you can see how many people in the U.S. have a particular name here: http://howmanyofme.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There are 1,224 people with my legal name. There is one other in the phone book in my city.

Kind of cool site, Jim, thanks. Only 275 people in the U.S. with my legal name. ;-)

265 for me, 9 of my wife, and it says 1 of my daughter. However, I know there are more than 1 because some people at our church have a daughter with the same first and last name. This site looks at the 1990 census data and neither girl was born yet, so the one prior and no telling how many in the past 19 years.:

Only 6 with my first and last name and only a little over 300 with my last name. Always knew there were not many of us in the US.
