Firearms Compliance Letter

Hey all,

I received a Firearms Compliance letter regarding an inspection on an FFL that I have never heard of from whom I purchased a firearm from and they want to know more about the firearm. Have any of yall ever seen this before? I thought they dont keep "track" of us. Not sure what to think. It wants me to call them. Any input?

The individual FFL is required to keep the 4473 for a certain amount of time. If they are asking you to call I would do as they ask.

I'd probably ignore it. I cannot think of any legal reason you'd need to deal with anyone on the matter.

Unless someone shows up with a warrant, in my opinion, they can pound sand.

well did you purchase the gun stated? cause you state you never heard of the ffl dealer. Also did it come certified mail?

i had to do this from time to time the likely need your SN because they are trying to take it out of their inventory and the number on the form is ether wrong or unreadable give them a call i bet thats what it is

The BATFE sent it to me. It seems legite. I will give them a call. I bet anything that ffl dealer was from a gun show when I picked up a Wasr10. I have since sold it so I dont know. I just thought theyd only mess with the ffl and not the customers

You're firearm may have since been used in a crime or it could have been stolen and recovered.

There is no registration. BATFE will trace its lineage from the manufacturer to the distributor to the dealer and to the original purchaser. Each of these must be contacted directly, as you were.

Situations like this are the best reason to prepare bills of sale for both parties. If the firearm was used in a crime, you can establish that you sold it and provide the next link in the chain. If the firearm was stolen and recovered, you can provide the info needed to return it to the owner.

If they found an error while doing a compliance inspection at the FFL, then it may be as simple as clarifying something on the 4473.

Another thing that just came to me. If they had probable cause for a warrant, they'd probably have already had one.

You have never heard of the FFL, but you purchased a firearm from them? Did you or did you not actually purchase a firearm from them?

If I were a lawyer, I might tell them to pound sand. But IANAL, so if I received a letter from the BATF, I would contact them.

If they do show up with a warrant, then you will have plenty of time to pound sand while you are waiting for your lawyer to get you out on bail.

I tried to call them and got no response. It had to be the one from the gun show which I filled out the 4473 and all that but didn't realize his name I guess. The Wasr was the only 1 I had purchased in October I think... But I sold it to a police officer buddy of mine. It is in good hands
