Non Resident Permit in Texas

Post by txbirddog »

If I had a Non-Resident permit, let's say Pennsylvania and was a resident of Texas with his resident CHL expired due to his application sitting during the current backlog, would I still be legal to carry here? Thanks.

Yes. Texas currently recognizes out-of-state permits without regard to whether the permit holder is a resident of Texas or the state that issued the permit.

I think Colorado is the only state that does not recognize non-resident permits. There could be more. I'm afraid that trend is going to spread.

That's one good reason for getting the Utah CFP, even though you're a Texas resident. You can still carry under the authority of your Utah permit if your CHL expires before you get your renewal plastic.

Utah is good if you want to travel to states that recognize Utah but not Texas. There are a few. However, it can be a hassle for many Texans to get because they live far from a Utah-certified instructor.

Pennsylvania is cheaper, easier to get, and just as good for Texas and quite a few other states.

If you will, please explain the 'how-to' about getting this done. Time is getting kinda close to vacations and Austin is s---l---o---w on renewals.

Thanks,

Send application, photocopy of Texas CHL, money, and SASE per instructions. No picture needed. In about one to two weeks you will get your SASE back with your PA permit in it (it is paper, not plastic). It is a multi-part form -- sign first page and retain that one, send the rest of the copies back. Done. ;-)

I just did this with Pennsylvania. I mailed the stuff out on 10/17, they processed it on 10/21 and it was in my hands on 10/27. So if you need it quick, I'd give my recommendation for the PA non-resident license. Also, it's only $26. :thumbs2:
