University of Washington students go hunting for robbers

Post by KC5AV »

Story and Video
These guys say some things that could get them in pretty hot water. I don't blame them for what they are doing, but I certainly wouldn't be advertising the fact that I was carrying. I think they've probably painted a bigger target on themselves. They also need to get a holster, or we're likely to read about them making a trip to an ER somewhere for something other than being attacked.
The LEO quotes the typical line about people with guns tend to feel invulnerable and put themselves in bad situations.

What they need to do is NOT go looking for trouble. They are not security and more than likely have NO training at all. Putting themselves in this situation will probably end up getting htem killed. :banghead:

A person with a CHL escorting an unarmed person to their car or across campus is one thing, but to go out to find someone for a confrontation is just asinine. :nono:

So is it really "premeditated" if somebody goes out walking in a "dangerous" area with the means to defend themselves?

They're still not forcing anyone to attempt to rob or attack them. Even if I walk around with a jacket made from $100 bills stapled together, it's not an open invitation to be robbed, is it? It seems that's the same as saying short skirts are a invitation for rapists to have their way.

Although not wise, I'm curious as to exactly how this would break the law? Can I "premeditate" that someone I don't even know will attempt to mug me?

You are correct in a literal (not liberal) context. But I wouldn't want to be in front of a jury explaining why I was wearing a jacket with currency all over it and then shooting folks that just wanted to come over and look at it.

The reported quoted UW officials reminding everyone that it is illegal to carry on campus.

Except, it's not illegal. Campus carry is legal in Washington. It's against policy and will get a student expelled, and maybe get visitors asked to leave, but it's not illegal.

Speaking of campus carry, here's a map.
