I had a full sized GI model, but someone needed a good gun cheap so I let them deal me out of it because I knew it would work. My primary carry is a Compact Tactical model, I literally trust my life to this gun so I think its pretty good. The thing works, eats everything, and goes bang EVERY time.

My nightstand gun is a RIA commander. Great pistol so far. I've put about 600 rds through it without a problem.

But I plan on doing what Andy did and eventually replacing the grips with Hogues.

Are parts interchangable with Colt?

pretty much interchangeable, as with all 1911 components some fitting will probably be required.

I have to say that everyone I have gotten my hands on seemed to have met specifications. At some point in this thread we will probably have someone who wants to push Kimber, Springfield, or someone else's products chime in and say how his half brother's grandmother's sister's husband's best friend's niece's boyfriend who is a machinist or BATFE agent, or mechanic had to do a lot of work to theirs to bring it into spec. Just ignore people who have to tell you they didn't see the problem but were told about it, or read about it on the Internet. Also, if the gun has issues it will have a lifetime warranty do resolution is a non-issue. Arnel (Their gunsmith) is top notch and pretty quick at what he does.

Kimber owner here who isn't gonna push Kimber in this thread.

Actually, I'm interested to know if RIA makes a commander sized pistol with an alloy frame.

I only have 400 rounds through my full size RIA 1911A1 GI model so far, but I'm liking it. Only complaint I have is the sights. GI sights are terrible in a low light situation. That's the only thing I'm tempted to swap out so far.

I own an STI Spartan, it's not an RIA but made by Armscor for STI to STI specs with STI internals. Several diehard Kimber fanatics have shot it and say it's as good or better than their Kimber. I don't know about that, I'm happy with it.

There are several other brands of 1911 pistols made by Armscor and sold here. High Standard and Charles Daly are two that come to mind.

Armscor is located in the Philippines. Is RIA and STI for that matter, just the importers, or do they actually manufacture guns themselves?
