Do you intend to win?

Post by Rob Longenecker »

Concealed carry has a very important mental component that requires some discussion. I don't have all the answers, but here's what I have to offer at the moment. I'd be glad to hear your thoughts.

Jeff Cooper gave us the color codes for mental readiness from condition white (unaware, unprepared and oblivious), through yellow (aware and prepared), orange (identifying a potential specific threat) to red (fight). There's something more fundamental, something that comes first, giving context to the whole issue of self-defense. Do you intend to win?

Deciding what you'll do ahead of time in different situations makes good sense. Beyond that, do you intend to win?
Here's a conversation starter:

A common misconception, and completely untrue.
Would this be a more accurate version or are you saying we shouldn't attribute the statement to Jeff Cooper?

Condition White: You are unaware of what's going on around you. Perhaps you're tired, or worried about work or school. Maybe your senses are impaired by alcohol or drugs. Either way, you are not ready--for anything.

Condition Yellow: You are alert but calm and relaxed, scanning your surroundings for threats. You know who's in front of you, to your sides, and behind you. You don't think anyone will attack, but you are mentally ready in case something happens.

Condition Orange: You sense that something is not right, and that you might be attacked. Perhaps there's a number of suspicious men standing around your car. Or in the classic Jeff Cooper example, a guy wearing a raincoat comes into your shop on a sweltering summer day. What's wrong with this picture?
In Orange, you are aware of the positions of all potentially hostile people around you, as well as any weapons they may be able to use--in their hands or within reach. You are developing a plan for dealing with the potential hostiles: "...first I take out the guy with the bat, then the big guy near the truck..." You have also identified multiple escape routes, depending on what response you will use. In addition to being mentally ready, you are physically ready as well.

Condition Red: The fight is on. Someone is assaulting you and you are reacting to the attack and defending yourself. You are taking immediate and decisive action to stop your opponent, flee, or get help.

A very complete and informative reply. Having heard Jeff Cooper personally describe the color codes 26 years ago, I still did not have as complete and accurate explanation as you did.

"Do You intend to win?"
Over time I have borken this down into 3 catagories of YES, I intend to win.
1. I intend to win because I refuse to be a victim. We live in a violent society in which many subcultures have no regard for life or well being at all. They do not care who they hurt, who gets hurt, & to a great extent even if they get hurt. Choose your victim somewhere else. I refuse to be your next victim. I may be your last.
2. I intend to win because you are not going to hurt those I love. Even if I am alone when an assault takes place, if I loose that makes my family more vulnerable because I cannot be part of the guard line. I refuse to be a victim because you are not going to hurt my loved ones. They are trained too & they refuse to be you next victim. If you get passed me they still may be your last victim.
3. I intend to win because I want a return to safe streets & society for my Grandchildren & their Grandchildren. The thugs have owned the street for too many years. The reason street thugs OWN THEIR TURF is because the good people have given up & been victims. Duty to retreat has sold the streets at a low price to the criminals. There was too long a time that even most LE said, "give them what they want, it is only stuff, dont resist, get out alive." That is trash. In my 30+ yrs of ministry I have councelled many victims. 100% agreement from them. The ones that fought back fared better after the fact than did those that did not fight back. Even the ones who lost the fight knew they did not let fear control their live. They did what they could. One that did not fight back said I die every time I close my eyes. That is no way to live. Several others have said, he took my money & hit me anyway.
Yes it is only stuff & it is not worth dying over. The stuff is not the issue it is the object of the issue. The issue is a society free of fear & citizens being able to walk the streets in peace, or a society that you have to buy protection from the thugs. We have been through those years in the 20's & 30's.
My grandchildren deserve a free country & society to live in. I refuse to be a victim because that means the street thugs are winning the war. Every generation must engage the war they are born unto. For the generation that because of age missed VietNaim & was too old for the Gulf, must still be active in the war for the streets. It takes place first at the ballot box. Then in training for what should never take place. Living in Cond. yellow w/ an immediate transition to orange is imperrative.
Decide to win in Iraq. The future of our free nation depends on it.
Decide to win at the ballot box. The future of govt control of the people or govt by the concent of the people depends on it.
Decide to win in your community. The future of our free streets depend on it.

LT wrote a wonderful essay on what I fear was once the dominate feeling in this country, but I am not sure this is still the feelings of the majority. I have never met LT but knowing he writes from the heartland of East Texas what he said did not surprise me. I lived for several years in the "country" near his area. When you are one hour or more from expecting any help you learn that YOU and the nearby neighbors are 911 and you better be prepared to take care of your loved ones on your own.

When the 911 system originated myself and most of my friends believed its purpose was to call the fire department to report fires. Today it seems our society teaches you that when danger lurks you are to hide in a closet and call 911 for the police. This is just another part of the "dependency on government mode" that has been brainwashed into our culture. My concern is that those that rely on the government for protection not only do not intend to win, they don't even intend to fight.

Thank you houston. Yes there are many in our nation that want the freedoms they enjoy & want it paid for by some one else. That is the attitude of those on social assistance, as well as the anti-American verbage spewers.
orc4hire, a short defination of the victory in Iraq. I do not know how old you are but if you are under 40 you cannot remember when the "Terrorist War On America" started. Only under Pres. Bush has there been a counter attack that we call a War On Terrorism.
In Nov. of 1974 America was attacked by terrorists for the 1st time. It was the Embasy in Terhan Iran. Those were American civilians as well as diplomats & military. An American Embasy is US Sovereign soil just like the attack on on the twin towers. They held Americans captive for over a yr while diplomats tried to negociate. From then until 9-11 there were repeated attacks on Embasys, Military bases around the world, air plaines that held mostly American passangers, & even our homeland. We never had quit 14 months of peace between any of those attacks. Some of them were only days apart.
Today we are winning the war in Iraq. The liberal news media will seldom tell any of the casualties except the ones inflicted on our troops or the Iraq civilians. Since 9-11 there has not been one successful attack on American Sovereign soil outside the war zone. My son is military security in the USAF. He did not go into the boarders of Iraq or Afganistan, but had several missions in the surrounding countries. In the language of the redneck country boy, we really are kicking their tail. Their casualties are far greater than ours.
For every Mother & Father that has given a Son or Daughter while mine lived to come home I can only cry as I type this. The fact is those soldiers are fighting the war over there so we don't have to fight it here on our streets as is being done in Iraq. If Our soldiers withdraw from Iraq before ElKida (sp) & other terrorists organizations are financially devistated, completely & udderly crushed, they will follow us to the homeland & do here what they did in Spain & England.
When I think of withdrawing our troops from a land that should have the opportunity for freedom I have to ask myself the question: When Santa Anna was oppressing the Texans, both European & Mexican, where would we be now if the Tennessee volunteers had said, We are not giving any of our sons to that fight.
It has to be won if our Grandchildren are to live free.
Respectfully LT.
