Am I the only one infuriated by this?

Post by pbwalker »

I'm a very nice, giving person. I understand hardships. I grew up dirt poor and vowed to never end up like that. But I just can't believe what I keep seeing in grocery stores today.

Young lady (or couple if the man is around) in the early 20's. Thousands of dollars in tattoo work. Cart full of junk food. Nice, fairly new, Honda Pilot. Nice jewelry. Designer glasses...

I mean...how does it feel to be a mother who can't afford to pay her kids, but can afford an expensive vehicle, tattoo work, and gucci Sunglasses? How does it feel to look at me behind you in line knowing that I paid for your groceries?
:banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

But my sister, who has a genuine hardship, can't get help...

That sounds like a great example why charity should be private and not government.
This will only hurt a little. What comes next, more so.

i hate it. was standing behind a lady the other day and she was complaining because something rang up $0.50 higher than advertised, but she had to get 4 cartons of marlboros  . whats better is when they pay cash for $200 worth of beer and pay for the rest of the stuff with lonestar cards.

Agree 1000%.

Legitimate charity organizations are probably about a gojillion more times efficient than any government agency as well imo...

My son told me he knew a woman that carried her lone star card in her $1.000.00 designer purse. I believe him.

I have a sister in law that has worked and paid into SS all her adult life, is crippled up so bad she can hardly walk and can’t get SS disability. :mad5 :mad5

Same for me PB. I see this nearly every day. People who I know are not disabled and can work but live off of the rest of us. Parents in their 40s and 50s with their 20 to 30 year old kids following right in their tracks.

They drive nice cars and buy groceries and junk food with the LS card and then run over to the 7-11 and buy beer, smokes and lottery tickets. Several I know sit and wait for the liquor store to open at 10 in the morning and then run in and get their booze.

Have seen them buy 20 dollars worth of scratch- offs and beer in the morning and be right back there again that afternoon buying the same again.

I know several of them that are on dope and they seem to be making it better than me and I have held a job since I was 15.

There is nothing right about this but I don't think there is anyway for us to change it, I just shake my head and gripe to myself for all the good it will do.

Show a bum an easy way to get by, pay him for being lazy and he will never work but always live off of us.

You would be amazed at what I see regarding Food Stamps, WIC, and other benefits. I have seen families that come in and can't English or Spanish (they speak something called "Low German") while driving brand new Escalades, Suburbans, Lincolns, and other vehicles. Rather than put the new Texas tags that they will get in the mail on it, they take the Mexico plates off of their old vehicle and put on it. I also see people on WIC buy T-Bone steaks, and other high end food products then pay for their baby formula, milk, and juices with WIC. And don't even get me started on the whole concept of the WIC program. Working in retail management lets you see stuff you would never believe.

Like G A HEATH I work in a retail store and yes the things you see and have to put with can become very much infuriating!!!!! It can be down right depressing at times. You feel like your :banghead: all day. Thank Goodness for the few good people that come in and make life at work bearable. I have family members that are having difficult times too, but are too proud to ask for assistance,or have tried to get help but was turned down, go figure!
WIC is a whole different animal!! I wish at LEAST the people that receive it, would LEARN how to use the thing! People cannot that dumb ALL the time..can they?

Thanks for letting me vent .....DD

You must keep in mind that everyone that pays with a LoneStar Card is not on welfare. Many welfare recipients sale their cards (going rate is $100LC for $50 USD) to people with normal jobs and lives. I do not condone this behavior, just giving an additional reason why some people with nice things pay with LoneStar.

Not everyone using a lonestar card is purchasing for themselves. I have gone shopping regularly for those unable to do so for themselves for various reasons.

While I share your outrage over those who abuse the system, I caution you to not judge individual strangers you happen to be behind in line because you never know what their story is and looks can be deceiving. Maybe those designer clothes were picked up at Goodwill or donated to the person's homeless shelter or were gifts from family who have since disowned the person or are vestiges of better days and the car isn't theirs but is borrowed from a friend of the family that is well off and can afford to be without it while the person gets back on his or her feet. Maybe that one guy has a job and is buying his boss the beer with the boss' money. I know it isn't likely that that's the case for everyone you see, but you don't know that individual's story and it is uncharitable to assume the worst and judge that person. Call for reform of the system, yes. Sneer at that lady or couple in line ahead of you whom you think shouldn't have it based on your assumptions, no.
