Anyone tried the 'new' Speer Gold Dot JHP for SB 45's ?

Post by DaveT »

Anyone tried the 'new' Speer Gold Dot, 230 grain Jacketed Hollow Point ammo made specifically for short barreled 45's ?

Don't know how 'new' it is, I've called several gunshops and they don't carry it yet.

Speer product number is 23975.

Can anyone recommed a good place to buy it over the net ?
I usually buy from Natchezz and they don't show it on their web site.

Found some at a gun shop about 25 miles away. They will have to order it, probably be in by next week so I can head for the range and try it out. Not as new as I thought, but also not widely available either. It actually came out in 2004.

I'd be interested in hearing more about the performance of the ammo.

Let us know!

This was posted by yellowv over on combatcarry.com, apparently he uses the SB ammo and really likes it. Several others there have posted that it works well in short barreled guns.

I think there's two differences. It's readily seen in the .45 caliber bullets that the bullet cavity is deeper and more cylindrical in nature...It may be this helps expansion. Other than that, it may be that they are also using a faster burning powder with more flash suppressants.

I say that because recoil feels slightly snappier (not more or less, just shorter duration) in my LW Commander and Glocks when using the SB versions of loads I normally run. I also see a little less flash in the shorter guns. I've asked others who've tried it and they all had similar observations.
When you take the time out of your day to beat someone, it has a much longer lasting effect on their demeanor than simply shooting or tazing them.

I use there 135 Grain hollow points for short barreled guns for my snub nose. It is a +p round but has a BIG hole in the front of it.

I chrono'd the SB's at an average 797 from my Kahr P45 with a 3.5 bbl.

That is slightly better than the velocities given by the Glock 3.8" bbl.

Fed Hydra Shoks averaged 853fps, better than any of the other rounds I fired.

The expansion and penetration shown in DateT's chart is truly impressive.

My dealer has received the Speer Gold Dot SB 45 cal and 357 ammo that I ordered from him when I started this thread, but he would have been closed by the time I could drive the 25 miles over there. Looking forward to picking it up Monday or Tuesday.

Also had him look around for a KelTec P3AT 380 with a hard chrome slide, it seems that his supplier has quite a waiting list. If I want to put my name on the list, there are 85 ahead of me........

I bought a box and shot them Sun afternoon in my Ultra CDPll. They seemed to be a little hotter but it's hard to tell. They do have a sharper felt recoil. They fed fine in my weapon. I just bought another box at lunch today and if I have no problems with ftf I'll start carrying them.

My dealer ordered the wrong ammo.....

He ordered Speer Gold Dot 45 caliber, 230 grain, GDHP's, stock number 23966. That's not the Short Barreled version.

Today he reordered stock number 23975, that is the correct SB GDHP's, 45 cal., 230 grain.

He did get the right box of .357 ammo in, that is stock number 23917 for SB 135 grain GDHP's. I'll try those out in my snubby wheel gun.
