Open carry in New Mexico?
Open carry in New Mexico?
Greetings everyone this is my first post and I wanted to say thank you for the creation of this site. My question is: I am going to be traveling to albequerque this weekend and I was curious of some information I heard. I know it's perfectly legal to carry in NM with a Texas CHL but I heard that since it is an open carry state that the authorities actually prefer for Texas chlers to open carry as well. I tried looking up info on this but it was very vague. Does anyone know if there is any merit to this claim? Thanks

Welcome to the forum. Here are a couple of websites that may help answer your question/s.
http://www.handgunlaw.us/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://apps.carryconcealed.net/legal/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
There are a couple or three real lawyers on the forum and I ain't one of 'em. Good luck in your travels, drive safely and alertly.

Re: Open carry in New Mexico?
Thanks for the links! I was a little confused about the wording at first. It stated that "New Mexico law allows a person to have a concealed loaded firearm in his/her vehicle (including
motorcycles and bicycles). If you are not licensed to carry concealed in this State, you may not have the
weapon concealed on your person when you exit your vehicle or motorcycle". This statement is probally what lead to the idea that if you have a texas chl that you had to have the pistol concealed in Texas but when you crossed over into NM then you had to open carry(did'nt seem quite right to me). I then checked on the NM DPS website and the wording was different it stated that:"New Mexico law allows a person who is not otherwise prohibited to have a concealed loaded firearm in his/her vehicle (including motorcycles and bicycles). See 30-7-2 NMSA 1978. If you are not licensed to carry concealed in this State or in a state that NM recognizes, you may not have the weapon concealed on your person when you exit your vehicle or motorcycle." I think I will play it safe and leave my pistol concealed, as it allows me to avoid any unconfortable incidents.
