Hornet

As many of you know, I teach middle school special ed. One of my classes is specifically for students that have never learned to read.

Lately, I've been teaching vowel-r syllables. (Ex: er, ir, or, ar.)

One of the words they read was "hornet." I always ask for the meaning of the word, or if someone can use it in a sentence. (It is important to attach meaning to a decoded word.)

One of my students told me it was a bullet, and he was as serious as a heart attack.

I had to chuckle.

It's the favored cartridge for 'roo hunters Down Under. Lots of Australian Lee-Enfields were converted to .22 Hornet for varmints.

Naw, I just hang out with Lee-Enfield collectors, many of whom happen to be Orstraylians.

That's how I learned about the 'roo shooters. Since they're after the hide for leather, they favor the small entrance wound.

The young lad has probably also heard of my favorite old M 43 Winchester's caliber: 218 BEE.
