Fingerprints when you dont have fingerprints

Post by doejohn »

My Mom is on her first renewal. She took the class mid September. Sent everything in. Prints (from previous approved chl) were rejected two weeks later. My mom had her prints redone and letters from her doctor and a retired police officer stating the condition of her hands would not allow clear prints. Basically, no ridges and severe arthritis. Mid November second set of prints rejected. Told would have to do electronic fingerprints. A week ago she does electronic fingerprints. Guess what? Rejected. She is told she will have to do them again (but wait for State to tell her they are rejected before she can do another electronic fingerprint scan again.) When she is denied a third time they will automatically give it to her.

She told me this story this morning. I told her she needed to light a fire under someones rearend. Apparently she did. She emailed me a few moments ago to say that she will have her CHL in less than 2 weeks. By the way, her shot placement is excellent.... :fire

Okay. I'll ask.

If she has severe arthritis, how did she pass the shooting portion?

She puts her crooked finger on the trigger and squeezes. You don't want to be in front of it. Seriously though, she has little strength but found a 380 she can rack the slide (she want's to be able to reload)

Ok, this is off topic, but I want to ask.
My syl cannot rack the slide on any of our pistols, so, I am curious what your mom is carrying?

I have had some elderly customers who could not rack the slides easily on most semi's and they did not want a revolver. They all decided on the Sig P238 because it is the easiest of everything they tried and they had no problems with it. The most recent was a wonderful lady 72 years young, and she shot it very well....

There was a Beretta .380 that did not require racking the slide at all. It has a tip up barrel so that the first round is loaded directly into the open chamber.

My brother bought my SIL one due to her rheumatoid arthritis.

These are available on the used market, but will be relatively expensive. One sold on GunsAmerica for $750. Another on Gunbroker had a reserve not met with a $500 bid.

Back on topic: Back in the 70's, I worked in the ID division of HPD. One gets very practiced at rolling prints, including all manner of oddities and deformities, but you always get something. We took the mug shots, rolled the prints, then went outside and classified the print card and performed the records search. AFIS, ha!! I guess manually classifying is a lost art these days. During each of my four CHL classes, I felt the urge to instruct the person rolling the prints.

Still, we didn't have to satisfy a remote agency. If there was a problem, we spotted it immediately and either got a better print or made the notations.

I've never racked the slide on, or shot, a Sig P238, but I do own a Walther PK380, and you could rack the slide with 1 finger if you felt so inclined. I tried to get my wife to use my XD40, but she could not rack the slide at all. We went to the gun show, and I told her to try as many handguns she could find until she found one that she liked, and that is what she settled on. I've shot it, and the recoil is very minimal as well. I'd imagine it is a great deal less than the P238 just because it is a bit larger. On top of that, it was $312. For someone having problems such as that, I would highly recommend it.
