Hello all! I recently (OCT2010) got my CHL in Texas and a few weeks later found out I got a job in Alaska. Bummer. But I am thrilled to be moving up there.
I know Alaska is an open and concealed carry state, with licenses issued only for people who travel to other states and want to carry. I do not anticipate doing this and probly won't pursue an Alaskan license.
Do I need to forfeit my license or send it back or what? How do I do this?

You'll love Alaska. I went there in '79 for a 6 month job. Came back to Texas in '91

If you drive up do not take your firearms with you through Canada. Too many ways to run afoul of their ridiculous firearms laws.
You can take the ferry from Seattle. It is pricey.

I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on.
I don't do those things to other people and I require the same of them.
Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he’ll just kill you.

Alaska would be at the top of my list if I liked snow.
+1 on keeping your Texas CHL until it expires, just in case.
You're not marrying one of the Palin girls, are you?

Yup, no requirement to forfeit your Tx CHL.
Which raises a new question....I wonder, can you do an early renewal? Might be worth checking into.
Beyond that....
Here's some help for getting your firearms to Alaska.

Or, when it comes up for renewal you can come back to Texas and take the renewal class. That's what I did back in February of 09, as we were living in Wyoming at the time.
Success always occurs in private, and failure in full view.

Trust me if they see your Texas plates when you enter Canada they will tear your car apart looking for guns.OldCurlyWolf wrote:If you drive up do not take your firearms with you through Canada. Too many ways to run afoul of their ridiculous firearms laws.
