Democrats - Are we going to loose our 2A rights now?
So with the Democratic turn over in the leaders of our country - does this mean a return of the Clinton weapon ban?
This isnt meant to start a political debate - I just want to know how it effects our long term 2A rights.

It concerns me, to the point, where if his (President Bush) first VETO of his Presidency is to save the lives of viable embryos from being used for research...
That to restrict citizens from protecting their own lives with whatever means they choose to do so with, would not be given the same courtesy, respect and trust...
And VETO...
At least for the next two years...
Whatever happens after that, I hope to be way under the radar by that time...

I was already planning on making some purchases in the next year. This just cements it.

I think they will try, but it will never make it to the President. Even if the Senate dose go to the Dem's and it looks like it will, they will only have a 1 seat advantage. That means they will not have the support to break a filibuster.JLinTX wrote:So with the Democratic turn over in the leaders of our country - does this mean a return of the Clinton weapon ban?

With that said, I expect(if they ever want my votes again) ether John Cornyn or Kay Bailey Hutchison to filibuster any attempt to reinstate the ban. I don't care what legislation its attached to.
I think Dave Kopel has an interesting analysis at National Review Online. It may not be quite so dire.

No new AR's would be sold - anything you already have would be "pre-ban".DustinB wrote:If the assault weapons ban comes back does that mean that anyone owning an AR would have to turn it over to officials or does that mean no new ARs can be purchased?
I doubt we'll see a new AWB for reasons already mentioned, but if so I'll run out and buy a new toy before it's signed.
ditto on both accounts. democrats are pushing issues like social security, security, immigration, foreign policy, etc. i haven't heard much about gun control lately. i think they learned their lesson when the democrats lost control of the house simply because they established the awb. i'm sure they'll try and piggyback stuff under the radar of most people, but i don't see much of it making it through both houses.nitrogen wrote:I don't think the democrats will be quick to reinstitute an AWB.
Having said that, i'm starting to buy Lowers.
I would be highly suprised if the Dems DIDN'T try instituting some new gun control, or reinstating the AWB. They'll quietly back-door it, putting it on some unrelated piece of legislation, but they'll try it.
The election was last night. Today, a brand-new DPMS Light 15 "assault rifle" sits by my door. Had to use up some trade fodder to get it, but it's worth it to spit in the gun-grabber's faces.

Seems to have worked just fine in California.Johnny wrote:I've heard tell of a ban that would be retroactive. Whether or not something like that would survive judicial scruitiny, I don't know.No new AR's would be sold - anything you already have would be "pre-ban".
First, they created a broad, vague, definition of "assault weapon", then required them to be registered.
And then they banned them. No grandfathering: either sell them out of state, or turn them in.
If there is a new version of the AWB, don't expect that it will look like the old one. They'll be sure to plug the "loopholes" they screamed about, and there won't be any guarantee of keeping existing guns.
