Road trip to Las Vegas. Have many questions!
Well my better half and I plan on driving out to Las Vegas for a week and I have many questions being that I have never been to Las Vegas or west of New Mexico with my CHL. We are taking the I-10 route through southern NM and up through Arizona into Las Vegas. I have several questions pertaining to different states. I will organize it that way.
New Mexico
- I have no questions and I am familiar with their laws.
Arizona
- I see no problems until I get to Gila River Indian Reservation south of Phoenix on I-10. I know different laws apply to each nation when it comes to gun laws. I assume I can't drive through this? I assume I will have to drive around?
- I will then drive through the southern most part of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area and cross into Nevada. There should not be a problem with this. Right? This falls under federal parks?
Nevada (Here comes all of my questions)
- When I cross into Nevada I can not be concealed on my person. Correct?
- I can have it in my car concealed off my person. Example: Glove box, trunk, luggage in back seat etc.
- Blue laws. I have heard about these being specifically referenced online pertaining to Boulder city and North Las Vegas. How do they apply to me, a non-resident?
- When I get to my hotel where do I store my firearm?
- What I mean by this is how can I take my handgun into a hotel that has a casino inside it?
-Do you guys know if a lot of these hotel parking garages are posted or have no gun policies? The hotel I am staying at has valet parking in a parking garage.
Any help with these questions would be greatly appreciated! Nevada is the state where I have my most concern, specifically from my car to the hotel room. Also any info on how you would recommend transporting my handgun through Clark County and Las Vegas would be appreciated. We love road trips but I WILL NOT drive through these states and the desert without my handgun. Safety first!!

CCWs in Nevada are issued by the county, rather than by the state. Some counties have more strict laws.
Check out the Las Vegas Metro Police Website:

Also, what about open carry? It is legal in Las Vegas. Correct? Could I open carry into a hotel casino as a non- resident?
Re: Road trip to Las Vegas. Have many questions!
I hate to sound negative, but what is legal is sometimes different than what is prudent. IANAL so I can't tell you if it is legal, but unless you want a "wooden shampoo" and like to eat asphalt, I wouldn't recommend it. A trip to Las Vegas is much more pleasant if you stay in a nice hotel/casino rather than the graybar hotel.CC Italian wrote:Also, what about open carry? It is legal in Las Vegas. Correct? I don't want to open carry on the strip but I was wondering how I should transport the gun from my car to my hotel room legally? I don't plan to carry anywhere openly! Just to get it to my room legally and then when I leave Las Vegas take it back to my vehicle legally. I just don’t want to leave it in the car. That’s it. I plan to have fun and will stay around my hotel and maybe take a day trip to the Hoover Dam or Grand Canyon but leave my handgun in the hotel room. If I need to go to another casino or resort and it is not close by I will just take a cab. I plan to stay where there are lots of people. I just want to bring it for that long road trip down those desert roads close to the border.

I will call LVMPD information line on Monday and inquire with them. Do you think I should call the hotel and ask their policy? I don't have a problem leaving the gun in a hotel safe either if required.

I don't know if you have made reservations yet, but here is a website that lists Las Vegas Hotels that have in-room safes.CC Italian wrote:I will call LVMPD information line on Monday and inquire with them. What I would do is: Pack the unloaded gun in my suitcase, put the magazine and ammo in another piece of luggage and bring it to my room. If the hotel had a in-room safe, I would stow the gun in the safe when I was not in the room. The other alternative is to put a gun vault in the truck of your vehicle and leave it there until you cross the border to a gun-friendly state. I would hesitate to do that, but it still would probably be just as secure as leaving it in the room if there was no safe.

Thanks, yes my hotel has an in room safe. Good website though! I guess my question then is does Nevada have a similar law to Texas in that you can transport a firearm from your vehicle to your residence lawfully without breaking the law. I know I could probably walk in and nobody be the wiser but I want to be sure.

Have you looked here for possible answers to your questions?CC Italian wrote:Thanks, yes my hotel has an in room safe. Good website though! Yes sir, I looked at that the other day. I love that website and use it when ever I go to New Mexico as a refresher. I have been going through Nevada legislation to see if there is anything specific on transporting a firearm from your vehicle to a residence (hotel in this case) but haven't found anything yet. I might have gone over it and missed it by mistake. I will take another look at it.
Re: Road trip to Las Vegas. Have many questions!
My suggestion would be to unload it, lock it in a case, and put it in your luggage.

Re: Road trip to Las Vegas. Have many questions!
Just called the hotel and talked to the head of security. He said it was not a problem. That I should tell valet that I need security sent down when I pull up. He said since it is private property when I pull up it is not unlawful carry and to just keep it in the case unloaded. They will come down and escort me to their arms room. Where I can keep it for the duration of my stay or they will escort me to my room where I can leave it in my room safe but they recommend that I leave it in their vault and he says people do it all the time. They do not allow open carry on their premises but he says it is legal in public but I would get stopped ever few minutes by a new officer who sees me on the strip and would not recommend it.

Re: Road trip to Las Vegas. Have many questions!
FWIW, Mrs. Oldgringo and I RV'd plumb across the state a couple of years ago with a couple of overnight stays along the way. We provisioned in Fernley and drove through Sparks/Reno, all with my CCW on my hip. I did take it off and stow it in the travel trailer before we hit the Kalifornia Fruit Police roadblock north of Reno on our way up to Susanville and onwards to the coast.
Concealed is concealed and if we'd been stopped, I reckon I'd would have been in trouble; ignorance of the law is no exuse, is it? I do know that I have no intention whatsoever of ever going to Las Vegas again.

Thanks for the update. It would be strange for me to have security escort me into the hotel.CC Italian wrote:Just called the hotel and talked to the head of security. He said it was not a problem. Oh well, maybe people will think that you're a celebrity.
