Renewal Class - Disappointing

Post by Afff_667 »

I took my first renewal CHL class last Saturday morning and was very disappointed in the instructor. In addition to some misinformation, bad advice, and several downright incorrect statements, he commented that he had no respect for law enforcement and made a couple of cracks about being stopped and ticketed despite his having a CHL, being an instructor and an upstanding citizen, etc.

He told us to indicate that we had passed both the written and proficiency tests on our CHL-100s as he helped us complete them before we had the opportunity to take either. The individual shooting in the lane next to me hit my target three times, and the rest of the shots were all over the place. One person didn't know how to load the magazine, lock the slide back, or release the slide on a very, very nice H&K USP...there was the one shooter that couldn't follow directions. During the written test, three people asked questions about several different questions on the test, and he proceeded to help them find the correct answers. Since we graded our own answer sheets after the test, it was apparent that his assistance with those questions didn't make a difference in those students' passing.

I have no idea how the rest of the day went for the folks taking the class for the first time and am very glad I didn't have to sit through it. I'm really disappointed. I guess I expected more...

very disappointing indeed.

For some people, the end result may just be to get that CHL100 to get their CHL, but this instructor is doing quite a disservice to those taking the class, as they will have absolutely no idea what is truly right and wrong when they carry a weapon. I feel bad for them when they get out in the real world.

Did you suggest to the class, or the instructor, to promote this forum for continuing education? If so, great, at least they will still have a chance to learn the true right and wrongs.

Can you imagine how dangerous it would be to carry and not know the law?
This instructor did a huge disservice to these students.

Give us his name, so we'll know not to use him.

I apologize if I sounded like I was on a rant. I found this site very soon after getting my CHL and feel like the knowledge gained here made the biggest contribution to my confidence and knowledge as regards carrying a concealed firearm. Maybe it's because of this site that my expectations were perhaps higher than they should have been. In any case, I'd prefer not to name him or the facility in public, but I don't feel bad about passing along that info via PM or direct contact.

I sat next to a father/son pair taking the class for the first time and did give them this web site so that they could further educate themselves. I didn't want to sound like "that guy" in class (there were already three of them), so I pretty well kept my mouth shut. However, I share the feelings shown here that the instructor was doing the students a disservice. The viability of concealed carry in this state has much to do with the folks licensed to do so, and the process of becoming educated begins with the instructor. A letter to DPS is probably appropriate in this case.

Not that I object to the turning him into DPS, however I do have a question. If DPS finds that the instruction was invalid, won't that invalidate the OP's renewal? Again, just askin...

It does all of us a disservice. When the new CHL'ers get out there and mess up everyone will be blamed as a group and not as an individual in the media. :banghead:

I agree with the above posters. A letter to the DPS with your concerns is certainly a good idea, and the name so we can be sure not to use him/her.

One ill-advised, unqualified CHL holder is enough to give an unwanted and unwarranted black eye to the program. It would seem prudent to police ourselves as much as possible to maintain the integrity.

Again, thanks Charles, for the forum, support and effort to help us do it.

In one post you mention you went for your renewal class. In another post you say you sat next to a father and son taking their initial class.

In my initial class there were three or four individuals there for a renewal. If I remember correctly it's the same class they just left earlier than the rest of us.

Normally the renewals will be in the same class as the initial takers, they just stay for the renewal portion, 4 hours (or whatever the required time is) - and range time
