Other states registration access?
Other states registration access?
If I'm traveling through a non gun friendly state such as NY or Ma will the police there be able to determine that I'm a CHL holder in Texas by running my vehicle registration or DL? I would not be carrying concealed at the time but the weapon would unloaded and locked away in the vehicle. I expect to get a non-res permit in my destination state since it and Tex don't recognize each others but I'm worried about crossing NY, NJ, and Ma. The rest are no problem.

Unless they can access TCIC or a similar system, they won't know unless they see your card or you tell them.

You need to read the laws for each state that you will carry in. In some states you are required to show your CHL if you are asked for drivers license, just like Texas. Also, know your prohibited places. Good resource is http://www.handgunlaw.us" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

I've been through that site repeatedly. Their laws are draconian and very unfriendly. The fed travelers law helps some. What I want to know is there anything that's going put a red flag up to the officer that is running my Tx plates or DL. If it indicates to the officer in one of those states that I have a Tx CHL then I'm likely going to get more questions and hassle. I know the CHL flag comes up for the Tx officers but is it available nationally. I definitly won't be carrying concealed in the mentioned states but passing through to where I can. A year or more mandatory jail is not condusive to a good vacation.

First off, I don't know what you mean that 'their laws' are Draconian and unfriendly. If you mean that you have to search and read, then yes, you have to do your research so you don't break a law in the state you are in. That includes the fact that you must follow THAT states laws if you are carrying. Some states you can't carry in any place that sells alcohol, must tell a person you are carrying before you go into a private home, can't carry in church, ad infinitum. If you carry when you travel, then know the rules where you go.2farnorth wrote:IKeith B wrote:You need to read the laws for each state that you will carry in. Second, your Texas CHL status is not available on an NCIC. The only way I know another state will find out via a query that you have a CHL is if they contact Texas and request a background run on you, or you get stopped while carrying (in a state with reciprocity) and you are required to show them your CHL. The query to Texas is normally not done unless they have arrested you and request a full background status. Standard traffic stops, etc shouldn't be an issue.
Now, in the states where your Texas CHL is not honored, you would not be required to show your CHL as means nothing to them, so they should not know you have it. If you follow those states laws on transporting a firearm through their state, then you should be good to go. And, just because the Fed Travelers law exists, NJ and some other states have more restrictive laws that they will enforce, so make sure you are clear on them and follow them to the T or the hassle can be big.
And, just because you have a CHL, if you are carrying in a state with reciprocity, it doesn't mean you will get hassled if they find out you are carrying. There are a lot of states that are much more gun friendly than Texas.

Thank you. ^^^^This is what I was asking about.
The draconian(gun) laws I was refering to were the ones for the listed states of NJ, NY, and Ma. They are very unfriendly to gun owners. The rest of the info I understood and will abide by all the individual state rules as I go. I just wanted to know if I should expect any additional hassle because of the possible CHL flag. You've relieved that concern. Thanks

If you have Texas plates that is the same as a 2nd Amendment sticker on your car in some states.
