Bought an XD 45 today
I stopped at a gun store in Sherman to buy some ammo today and lo and behold there it was - an XD 45 sitting in the case with a price tag of $495.00 on it.
Story on the gun- they sold it new to a guy who shot it one time (50 rounds) and decided he wanted a Kimber. They took it back in trade for the Kimber. So for $495 - the XD complete with everything, holsters, mag holders, manuals, warranty cards, add to that a rail mounted laser sight, plus they threw in 2 boxes of ammo. Heck of a deal, I thought. I just couldn't pass it up.
Merry Christmas to me.

At this early stage, I think that it will be a part time carry due to its weight and size. I'll carry it when I'm dressed in such a manner that I can conceal it and still be comfortable. My usual daily carry will remain my S&W 6946 in a tuckable IWB holster.
Are there some holsters that I need to stay away from?

That sounds like a sweet buy. I want another 1911 first, then an XD is on my list for 2007 sometime. I've only shot one once before, but I instantly liked the feel of the pistol. Even though it's the same magazine capacity as a Glock 21, there's no comparison on the grip and distance to trigger. I have medium-sized hands; I don't go around "palming" a basketball with my fingertips. And I can't consistently fire the 21: if I have the pistol properly aligned in my hand, the trigger is just far enough away that I can't get enough of the pad of my finger on the safe-action and trigger, and because of that, when I do shoot it, I tend to push everything left. So a high-capacity .45 ACP that doesn't need custom grip reduction to let me shoot it is awfully attractive.
And it's a bit on the pricey side, but if you want you can send your XD into Springfield's Custom Shop for some tuning (http://www.springfield-armory.com/XD.pdf). With a match-grade barrel, fitting, and a trigger job, these little guys are supposed to keep up with target pistols and hold near-one-inch groups at 25 yards.
The current issue of American Handgunner kinda helped seal the XD on my wishlist. The cover story is a review of the XD by none other than Clint Smith. A crusty 1911 fan, he states he's never owned a double-stack .45 that functioned except for a Glock, but he also says he can't shoot the Glock without a grip reduction, and you'll never see him with a Glock at Thunder Ranch. He wrote the article about two weeks after he received the test XD, and said he had been using it at the range and had loaned it to many students. He put 1,100 rounds through it during the first five days, and had five different people shoot 100 rounds each.
He closes the review by saying he has over 2,500 rounds through the XD in a little over two weeks, and used five different types of ammunition to do it. Not even a single hiccup the whole time. Clint then went out and bought three XDs for himself. Now that's a testimonial.
So I think that's a purchase you'll end up being very happy with.

Great choice...I have an XD 40 and have been thinking about getting the XD 45 for awhile. I am also a 1911 fan so my "wish list" grows daily. I'll say you got a sweet deal. Never can come up with that good of a deal myself. But I'm glad someone can[/quote]

Coincidentally, I was watching the "Personal Defense" show on the outdoor channel this morning, and Clint was shooting an XP. It was also in his holster the last show I viewed before this one.
Spartans ask not how many, but where!
Shucks. I gotta contact Time Warner Cable and see how much it will set me back to add the Outdoor Channel to my line-up. I pay the bums way too much as it is.
(BTW, a very rare Houston Texans win just went on the record books. Wow.)

I love my XD9 so much I got the XD45. It shoots well even in its stock configuration. Check out http://www.xdtalk.com for an active XD forum.
