Marlin Model 336

Post by HOSSISFREE »

I have inherited a Marlin Model 336 R.C. rifle, Micro-Groove Barrel, with no serial nu number, but there is JM cartouche on the barrel. I am at a loss for the value. Any info would be appreciated.

You should post this question on http://www.marlin-collectors.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. I'm pretty sure you'll get a faster answer there. :tiphat:

Marlin did not manufacture 336 rifles without serial numbers. Look on the bottom tang under the lever, there should be a number there. .You can date it by that number. Is the butt stock straight like the picture or does it have a curved grip?

Micro-grove barrels came out about 1953-4 and depending on condition should be worth about 250-400. Marlin is now owned by the same company that owns Remingtom and Marlins are now made by them and by all accounts I've read quality has suffered. The pre Remingtons are great rifles and perfect deer rifles in Texas for close to intermediate range.

Serial number: Y3135B

Fired it for the first time today. At 50 yards it shot a little high. Adjust the sight one click, and it shot low. Given that you can't rightfully see a target aiming high, I put it back where it was, and just aim low for dead on. Windage was good. Dialed it in quickly. May need to get a simple scope for 200 yards or less. Plan on Coyote hunting with some friends this weekend. It should do.

Hoss,
The last digit in the sequence on the serial number is most likely "8" not "B". With a Y prefix it indicates a manufacture date of 1964. BTW is it a straight stock? If so that would make it the "Texan" model. I sold hundreds of Marlins in the middle sixties to early seventies. Good luck shooting the dogs!

Hoss,
This is the 336C. Curved pistol grip vs the 336T pictures that you posted.

Love these guns. Had one back in at A&M in the early seventies. Wish I had kept it. Been looking for a nice pre '82 model with the checkering which depending on year make, a 336C or 336ADL or other variant. The checkering was not always done on those models on some years. Thanks for the pics and enjoy.

Hoss,
I forgot to ask if there's a saddle ring on the left side of the receiver. Like this

If it was sighted to hit high at 50 yards, it was probably zeroed for 100 yards. You should find a range where you can shoot the 100 yard line without optics and see if that is actually the fact.
