February Austin area get together -- 2/24 Hill Country 1PM

Post by j1132s »

Update--

Meeting at 1PM (the time this range opens, yes 1PM on Saturday,
I just verified w/ its owner) at Hill Country Rifle Range in Dripping
Springs. Here're some reviews:
http://austin.citysearch.com/review/10186876

For those that'd like to car pool from Austin. Please contact me
and we can coordinate. I have a minivan that carries 7 :)

Here's more details:

1. The owner said he's got falling plates and rails at 25yd, which
we can shoot! If this is what I think it is, it'll be a lot of fun. (Must
use non-magnum cartridges).

2. And he's got fixed steel for rifles at 200yards. I think probably
a bit too far for the .22LR.

3. There's a CHL forum pistol competition on right now. I'll bring
NRA targets for us to shoot in case you'd like to participate.

4. My mobile is 408 area code, 7 seven 2 six 2 two 7 (read it out)

Hope to see you there!!

Hi guys,

The last one was a lot of fun: Great people, nice shooting day, and decent range. A few people who expressed an insterest but couldn't make it last time, so I'm thinking maybe we can settle on a date/location earlier for this next meeting to give everybody a chance to join in the fun.

Another idea I have is to pick a range that allows FMJ rifle rounds so that we can also bring our rifles, and if the range allows it, perhaps some shotgunning too.

Please let me know what you think of 2/17 or 2/24 or ???

I sure like the idea of FMJ! It would be nice to add rifles to the mix...

Would anyone think it to be a good idea to make it a regular date? I'd like to vote for the 4th Saturday of the month. That way we can plan in advance and wouldn't interfere too much with a lot of other things that go on during the month. I've never heard of too much going on the 4th weekend.

Rifle with FMJ, would be ideal. If we find a place but it's far away, we could carpool. I really want to get this going, last time was really great.

I like the idea of a regular date, and the 4th Saturday sounds good. (O6nop is right, not much going on at this time; the only regularly scheduled "local" event is the 3-gun match at Copperas Cove.)

Anybody who has issue w/ this date (4th Saturday), please speak up (we'd hate to miss you because of it).

In the mean time, let me check with Austin Rifle Club and see if we can have it there this time.

will ARC let you come out in groups if not members? I'd like to check them out before comiting to the safety course and dinner.

There's a decent range in New Braunfels that offers FMJ, open pistol range, etc. The facilities are not as nice, but we're not there for brunch... we're going to shoot! I shoot there all the time, and if anyone is interested in traveling south it would be a great place for a get-together.

Dietz's Gun Range
421 Range Rd
New Braunfels, TX 78134
CLICK FOR MAP

$10 to shoot, $8 for NRA members
No time limit
No ammo restrictions, but no full-auto
Skeet shooting available also

4th Sat is good for me this month.

Shooting

I belive the Hill country rifle range allows FMJ. It is outdoors, off of Hamilton pool road. between Beecaves and Dripping Springs (south west austin) I think it is about 10.00 per person. We could maybe negotiate a group price if it were a regular thing. If you guy's were interested I would make a call and ask. This range is basicly just land in the Hill country, with some places to setup tagrets. There are benches and a covered area for rifle shooting.

Variety is good. We should try out all sorts of places and be willing to travel to everyone's favorite range. Although I'm anxious to try out ARC, I plan on being a member there soon so I'm willing to go just about anywhere. The more we find out about all of the ranges around Austin and surrounding areas, the better for all of us.

jhutto - I'd like to hear more about Hill country rifle range, I guess they also have pistol ranges? That would be great if we could get a group rate.

I'm anxious to hear what everyone else thinks before the 24th!

I do know if LaGrange is to far to drive ,but I am a Range officer and we only charge 5.00 for the day at the Fayette county gun club . We offer rifle and handgun Plus we have a Trap and Skeet fields and a 5 stand and Country doubles I will have to look at the schedule and see when ht next matches are .

But here is there web page.

The owner is not interested in group rates. The range basicly consists of piles of dirt. It is more like going to someones private land than a range. FMJ is fine. The rate is 10.00 per day/per person (1 gun) plus 2.00 per additional gun. It is nice being goutdoors in the hillcountry, often there is no one else on the range at all.

LaGrange is a bit far, but Carpooling might not be so bad. I offer to drive my pickup if someone wants to ride, and they do not mind second hand cigarrette smoke. This of corse depends on what day everyone decides on. Febuary for me may be tough. It is the last month I have to kill management deer in West Texas.

I could see making the drive from Houston to La Grange on a Saturday. It's about 90 miles to La Grange for me, but about 145 to Austin. A 90-minute drive is just like a bad, one-way, weekday commute in heavy traffic.

If not February, maybe we can take Doc up on the offer and see about a Houston/Hill Country combined get-together sometime in the future. A few willing carpools, a willing restaurant in La Grange for lunch (gotta be barbeque and/or chili, what else?), and we could have a fun day with (probably) a lot of guns to try.

Sumpin' to think about.
