Man, 79, disarms intruder with karate chop
By Robert Stanton | December 4, 2012 | Updated: December 4, 2012 10:45pm
A 79-year-old League City resident turned the tables on a would-be burglar, incapacitating him with a karate chop and then holding him until police arrived, investigators said.

Ervin Brittnacher was awakened by noises outside his home in the 3000 block of McFarland Road just before 6 a.m. Monday and walked over to investigate, said Lt. Bruce Whitten of the League City Police Department.

Brittnacher saw a man toting a rifle, a .223-caliber Ruger Mini-14, police said. The homeowner sprang into action, hitting him in the throat with the side of his hand, and then taking the rifle, Whitten said.

Apparently the CCTV on his property managed to catch the moment before he struck the bad guy.

Charles Smith, 38, allegedly made a few mistakes early Monday morning that included getting high on bath salts and knocking on the wrong door. Police say Smith, armed with a rifle, broke off the screen door of Ervin Brittnacher's home in League City, Texas. Brittnacher, a 79-year-old former bull rider, promptly punched the armed intruder in the throat and karate-chopped the side of his neck, knocking him out cold for the police to pick up. Brittnacher later offered these wise words: "I used to own a nightclub, and I knew it was never a good idea to talk to people holding guns."

I can hear the antis now. "You see, you don't need a gun to defend yourself. Just use karate. Even a 79 yr old can do it"

I believe the above news video link is different from the other links posted above.

Here's an example of a man with loaded rifles by his back door, but he chose to use non-lethal means
to stop the threat. I'm glad it all worked out.
