The school board is considering allowing teachers with a CHL to keep their gun in their car in the parking lot.

"Currently the schools are a gun free zone and a teacher would face disiplinary action if caught"

Now, I thought with a CHL, the "gun free zone" was reduced to buildings only. I also thought that with the parking lot bill passed 2 years ago, a CHL could keep their weapon in the car on most parking lots and didn't remember a school being exempt.

Am I wrong or is this just a "feel good measure" taking place. Can someone enlighten me please.

I think it is a feel good measure. Last year before school began they had a meeting with all employees and told them that "they would be fired immediately" for a firearm in their vehicles.

I do not know much about the parking lot bill, but it should have something for those who discipline their employees for doing something legal.

Feel good measure for the school board, so they can say they did something. What they've really done is similar to those two newspapers putting up gun owners and which schools have and don't have security. If they announce they allow their teachers to have guns in their vehicles their vehicle break rate will skyrocket. Idiots!

It helps the employee with their security coming to and from work, but does nothing for it while at work other than increase the stress worrying if someone will break into your car and steal your gun.

CHL's can carry in a school parking lot under TPC46.03 (46.035?).

Yes... It's an improvement for teachers who want to carry to and from work, but I really don't see how this Irving proposal does anything useful to protect students. I suppose you could argue that a teacher faced with an active shooter could run to the car a grab a gun. In the 5 minutes it took the Newtown shooter to wreak his havoc, I don't see how a gun in the car would be much of an improvement.

As a factory worker I have to disagree with point number 9. I work in a factory where anyone could walk in with a gun, a person with a CHL can do so legally, but I and my coworkers would be fired for doing the same.

They did put up cameras last week, so now we will have HD video for the five o'clock news.

I can definitely see an increase in vehicle burglary in the Irving ISD parking lots. Maybe what they should do is put a sticker on vehicles that have guns. At least then the burglaries will be limited.

College Campus vehicle burglaries are high ...because (IMHO)... forced car storage of guns

So a criminal first would visit the free-gun-farm (college parking lot) to pick one up from the free gun farm, then he could visit the neighborhood stop-n-rob/bank/home invasion/ etc

It's not illegal if they have a CHL (or the firearm is unloaded and secured) so all the ISD has to do is stop threatening to fire teachers who aren't breaking the law.
