4 Hour Class....NOW?

Post by jocat54 »

I just spoke with a chl instuctor about taking his class and he told me he is teaching the 4 hr class now. Class starts at 1PM. I asked him about it and he said that there is 10 chl instructors that DPS has okayed to do these classes now.

Is this legit if the bill hasn't been passed? He said that DPS knew that it would pass.

Even if it does pass, it does not take effect until Sep 1st.
So, IMO, he is blowing smoke.

My class was supposed to be 10 hours and lasted maybe 6 (really 3 / 4 after breaks).

What time was shown on your CHL-100 that you sent to DPS? If you are saying that your CHL-100 showed 10 and you really only had 3-4 after breaks, then the Instructor is not following the rules and should be reported to DPS.

I guess that's a possibility.

If this isn't a renewal class, then it can't be done legally. DPS cannot authorize any instructor to violate Texas law. The 10 - 15 hr. requirement for an initial class is not a DPS rule, it's in statute. Before you attend such a class and turn in a CHL-100, I'd call DPS.

I smell a rat. There is no way he is "authorized" to give you a 4 hour course if it is an initial Texas CHL. Ask him to name off the other 10 specially-privileged instructors :evil2:

Better yet, get him to show/provide you his written authorization from DPS to perform those initial 4 hour classes. I'm sure DPS would be very interested in seeing a copy of it.

Breaks, (10-15 minutes per hour) are INCLUDED in the instruction times.
