What to do with old CHL when changing address?

Post by DaveT »

Just a quick question...

Just received my replacement CHL with new address because of our recent move.

Ordered the replacement online and it only took a week to receive it.

Should I just destroy the CHL with the old address, or does it need to be returned to Austin ?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure on this but I believe our instructor told us that we had 30 days to return it to the state or we could face a fine or possibly lose our license. You might want to check it out before you destroy it and throw it away.

No need to return old CHL for a change of address. Only need to return old one for a modified license.
GC §411.184. MODIFICATION.
(a) To modify a license to allow a license holder to carry a handgun of a different category than the license indicates, the license holder must:
(1) complete a proficiency examination as provided by Section 411.188(e); and
(2) submit to the department:
(A) an application for a modified license on a form provided by the department;
(B) evidence of handgun proficiency, in the form and manner required by the department;
(C) payment of a modified license fee of $25; and
(D) one or more photographs of the license holder that meet the requirements of the department.
(b) The director by rule shall adopt a modified license application form requiring an update of the information on the original completed application.
(c) The department may modify the license of a license holder who meets all the eligibility requirements and submits all the modification materials. Not later than the 45th day after receipt of the modification materials, the department shall issue the modified license or notify the license holder in writing that the modified license application was denied.
(d) On receipt of a modified license, the license holder shall return the previously issued license to the department.
(e) A license holder whose application fee for a modified license under this section is dishonored or reversed may reapply for a modified license at any time, provided the application fee and a dishonored payment charge of $25 is paid by cashier's check or money order made payable to the “Texas Department of Public Safety

I would put it in my dresser drawer. I think when you get a new drivers licence you are supposed to destroy the old one but I keep all of mine. It not like the FBI is going to break down your front door cause you didn't destroy your CHL.

Then you would be violating the CHL Administrative Rules. See three posts up from yours.
