I thought it was interesting that 26% percent of the 580,000 were issued last year. I'm assuming that includes renewals.

My dad is about to turn 75, and has his CHL from the inception. I'm proud of him for never acting old, feeble, and helpless. Just be careful if you walk in on his nap!

Arthritis in both knees and right hand, a little slower than I used to be.
So since this isn't Hollywood, I carry a Concealed Handgun.

Although a shotgun is a nice choice as well.

Found a number of guns in my FILs house after he died (in his 80s). His mint condition Colt 1911 that was issued to him in WWII was locked and cocked.

Almost there.
I am not and have never been a LEO. My avatar is in honor of my friend, Dallas Police Sargent Michael Smith, who was murdered along with four other officers in Dallas on 7.7.2016.

One part of the equation is people 50+ are generally more prosperous than young people in their 20's. It takes a substantial financial commitment to get a CHL when you are paying roughly $100 for the training, another $20 for the qualification test ammo, and $140 for the license.

Just to contrast, it costs $20 to get a license in PA.
