Suspect Arrested in Shooting - Rattlesnakes Involved

Post by WildBill »

The Sheriff's Office has identified the suspect in custody as John Steven Danner, 23, of rural Paso Robles. He is being charged with one count of murder, and there are no additional suspects. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Wardens with California Fish and Wildlife removed rattlesnakes from the home.

Sheriff's Office officials began their search of a five-bedroom home in rural Paso Robles early Friday afternoon.According to Detective Cmdr. Ron Hastie, at approximately 3 a.m., the Sheriff's Office received a call from a local hospital, reporting that one person was being treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound. The patient, who is not being named, was treated and released by noon Friday.

At the scene, deputies, forensic investigators, and state Fish and Wildlife officials secured a search warrant to enter the home. Hastie said state officials were called because officers were informed the home contains various reptiles, namely rattlesnakes, which appeared to be kept as pets.

"For our officers' safety, we're having them removed," Hastie said.

A body was discovered at the doorway of the home. Hastie said that multiple ammunition casings were found at the residence.

Hastie said it is believed that three people lived in the home, and one person is in custody. Though he said the Sheriff's Office is not releasing that person's name at this time, custody logs list 23-year-old John Steven Danner booked Friday morning on suspicion of murder.

Hastie said the investigation remains in the early stages, and that authorities will remain on scene for the next few days. He said a Department of Justice forensic team is on its way from Santa Barbara to begin photographing the scene.

More information will be available later in the day, Hastie said.
