when getting pulled over while carrying

Post by dwsintxs »

I have had my CHL for about 2 months, carrying every day, it feels 'normal' to do so. In fact, I was very surprised on my 2nd day of carrying that it felt natural, wasn't uncomfortable, and I am able to completely forget about it (comfort-wise) when at my desk, or when driving, eating in restaurants etc etc.

My EDC is Ruger LCP or my new S&W M&P Shield 9

My question is regarding when you are getting pulled over in the car.

Let's say that a LEO officer is in his cruiser behind you and decides to run your plates . . .can he see at that point that you are have a CHL or does the actual driver's license need to be run before they can tell you have one?

Just wondering how that works.

They won't know until you hand them your DL and CHL. If you don't give them your CHL (or otherwise inform them) they will find out when they run your DL.

I occasionally listen to the Kerr County sheriff radio and I have heard the dispatcher come back to a 10-27/28/29 request (from a traffic stop) with CHL information.

The CHL is not tied to your license plates in the system. However, if they run a quick check on the name and address that the vehicle is registered to they may be able to see the owner has a CHL. Until they approach and then get your license they can't verify you are driving though.

I Have been been told that some agencies have programmed their computer systems to automatically run a DL check on the name of the person a vehicle is registered to when an officer runs a tag. That DL check will show a CHL if one is issued. However, that is a specialized way of programming and not in any way a standard set up.

Also, a sharp dispatcher will run cross references when an officer runs a tag via radio when time allows.

A few cops have told me they would much rather pull over someone with a CHL because they know they are law abiding citizens and don't have to worry about being harmed.

Seems like wasted motion. I may be misunderstanding their point, but I prefer stopping t-rds.
