House of Pies robbed in Houston, shots fired

This hits a little too close to home. House of Pies is one of my favorites for chicken fried steak. There are two locations in Houston one on Kirby inside the loop that is closed due to a fire and the other on Westheimer outside the loop. They also have excellent pies. Happened at 10pm.

Robbers fire shots into the ceiling to get everyone's attention robbing patrons of cellphones and money.

Is this the new normal?

This is the exact type of scenario where I'm not sure how I'd react.
There are 100's of variables, I know, but in general, there are a few primary concerns I have:

1) Mine and my family's immediate safety
2) A major tactical disadvantage
3) engaging could cause a shootout that could injure/kill many including me and/or family
4) I always think that I *never* want to leave my fate in the hands of criminals (i.e., relying on their decision to harm me).

This scenario, with multiple badmen with guns, me sitting in a seat surrounding by people I care about is a nightmare. If I can't get to a position where return fire wouldn't come the direction of family, then I feel like you'd be a sitting duck and just have to comply until the scenario changes a little to where you either can get the tactical drop on them with less risk, or if it's inevitable that you or family is going to get harmed regardless.

Would love to hear from those with training or experience regarding this type of scenario.

These type of robberies do happen, although not as frequent as just sticking your gun in the clerks face.

For me I'm going to be a good witness if at all possible. Money is insured and not worth dying over. Should it turn deadly then I am NOT giving any warnings before engaging. Giving a warning in this scenario will give the bad guy(s) the upper hand that you held prior to opening your mouth. One better be real confident before taking on multiple armed shooters and have sufficient equipment to do so. For me I carry my kel tec pf9 and with 8 shots it is for defense, not engaging crews like this.

The House of Pies restaurants have had a rough run lately. Glad noone was hurt.

Even if I were carrying my G19 with an extra mag, it'd take a lot in this situation to convince me to engage.

I definitely agree with Joker, if I engage I won't be giving any kinds of warnings. There is no such thing as a fair fight.

Bad guys definitely weren't planning on a fair fight. Maybe they'll just get rid of each other when they fight over money or drugs in whatever hole they live in.

Tactical, engaging, type gun w/how many mags etc etc..
I will just say that regardless of the training (and I had some in the Military and LE)
I will promise that in a surprise it can all go out the window when it happens.
In real life we really dont know how we will react till its OVER!

Studied night after night for the CPA exam there in the early 90s. Usually from 7:30 until 11:00 or so. Johnny and Edgar Winter's aunt used to be a regular as well. Would listen to her gripe endlessly about Edgar's affiliation with Scientology. It was a great place to hang out back then.

I saw that all the time here and in the real world. Talk is cheap. Until one has actually had to squeeze the trigger they don't even know if they can do it. It would suck to find out while trying to engage a target vs being a good witness. :thumbs2:

Robber who was caught at the House of Pies robbery, was charged with Capital Murder. They car jacked someone to get the car to use in the robbery. They killed that poor man.

Victim in murder was studying to be an engineer. Father of son arrested, says he was "forced" to rob House of Pies, despite previous arrest record. Other man who was not captured shot and killed the victim.

Second man who got away at the scene has been arrested. So both BG's are behind bars.

Well done HPD.
