Cop shoots elderly man?

The Old man should not have left the safety of his car. I saw couple secs of the video and the old man was out of his vehicle, no clue why?

I saw the dashcam, but it was Liveleak. Gotta be a youtube version somewhere.

Basically, the old man got out of the pickup truck when he was pulled over for speeding at night and started walking towards the police car. He reached in and pulled a cane out of the pickup bed. Looked like the cane was momentarily swinging in the officer's direction. Meanwhile, the officer is on video screaming, "Drop the gun, drop the gun, drop the gun, . . . " as he shoots him.

Tragic, but understandable.

I don’t understand why. As long as all officers are not condemned by what a few do.

As I said I could not get the video to play so I can’t judge. I have said over and over though that in a situation where some one has a gun or they believe someone has a gun, their first action should be duck for cover if possible. That may not be the case here but too many officers are killed by standing and shooting at the criminal. Too many innocent people are killed for the same reason.

For what, to justify the deputy shooting the "old man"?

I am not justifying anything. The shooting looks like an over reaction due to extreme fear and panic.

There is a much-overplayed video that gets played over and over and over and over in training departments across the country. In it, a state trooper has an older fellow pulled over, and the older fellow goes nuts, claiming to be a Vietnam vet, daring the officer to shoot him, and finally reaches into the back of the truck, pulls out an M1 Carbine and executes the officer. It's shown over and over as a "find everything wrong with this stop" video, but one of the things emphasized is "don't let them get out of the car, and DEFINITELY don't let them reach back in for anything!"

I'm betting this officer had -just- watched that video, or one like it.

(Curiously, the several dash-cams showing drivers opening fire on officers from the window, without ever opening the door, don't ever get comments of "always extract the driver/passenger and get them away from whatever is in the vehicle." Neither do dash-cams of drivers attacking the officer with their vehicles. I'm not sure exactly why, but standard "procedure" seems to be to have the driver sit and wait).
