2-year old shoots sibling with loaded/cocked gun

Post by n5wd »

Tragic - a 2 year old in Philly gains access to a loaded gun and shoots and kills his 11-year old sister on Sunday. It's apparently the Mom's boyfriend who owns the gun... stored on top of a refrigerator.

That thought process is how 2 year olds get guns and kill themselves or others.

You cannot hide a gun or put it out of reach of a kid.

I completely agree. Lock up all firearms. Thats what safes and cabinets are made for to keep them out of the hands of unauthorized users. Even when my toddler couldn't move around all my firearms were locked in the safe.

There were 4 kids in the house. That's how a 2 yo gets a gun off the fridge.

It sounded like the mom and the four children were playing with the gun in the bedroom, when the mom left the bedroom to go to the bathroom.

I teach all my kids about firearms from the time they can talk. I also lock up my firearms in safe's or store them unloaded and locked open and store the cartridges and magazines in the safe. Kids can and will get into anything. Kids can and will ignore any training you give them. Be smart people. No other kids need to die.

It's easy to blame it on the 2 year old if someone else did it. Like one of the older kids. Like someone that could get it down from a refrigerator.

There are a few holes in the account given to the reporter.

Why is the Hearst-owned Houston Chronicle reporting on an incident in Philadelphia? Oh yeah, it an article that paints guns and gun owners in a negative manner.
How does a 2 year old get a gun with Mom and older siblings in the room? (There's no evidence of, or reason to believe, the 2 year old retrieved the gun from the top of a refrigerator.)
How long was the Mom in the restroom? I suspect it was not long enough for one of the older children to retrieve the gun.
Was one of the older kids the shooter, or possibly even Mom? (Why would Mom allow the kids to play with a loaded gun?)

Why is the long-time anti-gun Chronicle reporting on this PA incident? Oh yeah, I've already covered that one.

Please point out the evidence that the 2 year old retrieved the gun from the top of a refrigerator.

From the article;
Police believe the mother's boyfriend had brought the gun to the house and stashed it on top of a refrigerator

I don't think it matters if THIS particular child got the gun from on top of the fridge. If someone thinks a kid can't, they are risking that kids life. That is my point. You cannot hide a gun or put it out of reach to keep kids away.....

The mother's boyfriend had brought the gun to the house and stashed it on top of a refrigerator.

Somehow, it ended up in the bedroom. From there, the four kids got a hold of it and treated the .357 caliber handgun with an 8-inch barrel as a toy.

And then, the gun fired while it was in the hands of the youngest sibling, a 2-year-old boy
...............
In all, four kids in the house played with the gun, including a 14-year-old boy and 7-year-old girl, according to published reports.

Charles, I thought the same thing. How is this Houston news? Never let a tragedy go wasted I guess.
