It appeared one guy had a shot gun. Advantage for a CHL lots of targets, not many customers and lots of cover. Disadvantage for a CHL lots of targets shooting back and that shotgun.

Nothing good will happen after 11:00 PM. It is challenge to take on 4 armed bad guys. However if their leader (first in) is down, usually the rest will scatter and bail out.

There was an incident a couple years ago where some unlucky punk decided to rob a bar full of cops (all in plain clothes) that had been at some kind of nearby convention or meeting. IIRC several of the cops just put him on the floor, at least one of them while holding (but not spilling) his beer. there's a video of it somewhere.

As for the IHOP -- would seem the optimum time to fight, if you are going to do so, is when they are coming through the entrance, when the they are together and have very limited mobility. The "fatal funnel." Once they get inside and spread out it's much dicier situation.

Of course you have to see them coming through the parking lot and realize what you are seeing before they get inside.

NYC once had a police team that focused on robberies of drug stores that had become very prevalent. The team killed a number of robbers, and robberies went way down for awhile, but various community leaders objected to who was getting shot, so the team was disbanded.
