No greater mistake can be known to a man.

Not posting this to encourage the bashing of the irresponsibility of the gun owner,
but aside from the obvious, how can WE be involved with leading/educating/role-modeling responsible firearm ownership
within our circle of influence?

Making a loaded firearm accessible to an unsupervised minor is already a criminal offense in both Ohio (where the crime occurred) and in Texas. Clearly the answer is not in more laws, but in education and training.

Any Texas CHL who does not realize this is a crime wasn't paying attention in class!

All that said, what a tragedy. This will affect every member of that family forever.

I agree that education is key, but it's not only, or even primarily, educating gun owners. Mandatory firearm safety education in schools is the key. "Securing" firearms is the law in Texas, but the more prudent course of action is to 1) educate; and 2) remove the "lure of the forbidden fruit" by providing a safe environment for kids to handle firearms and learn.

Firearm accidents are at a historical low, so we are hardly looking at an epidemic. PLEASE don't give me the "even one is too many" response. Far more children die from drinking or eating poisonous chemicals under the kitchen sink, but we don't see a call to "do something."
