HPD Training Academy off limits?

Post by FL450 »

My daughter will be attending The "Tire Rack Street Survival School" tomorrow held at the HPD Training Academy by IAH.
I have searched Texas 3006 with no results. Besides being city owned does anyone know if there are restricted areas of the academy grounds?
Her car will be inspected by the instructors and also requested to have no loose objects in the car so I do not want to leave it in her car while I am waiting should there be restrictions.
I love the sound smell of jet fuel in the morning.

IANAL - If it's government-owned - and I'm sure it is - a 30.06 posting would be unenforceable, by statute (30.06 ..... (e) - last heading in that section). Restrictions would only apply if it fell into any of the other restricted locations - court, correctional facility, etc. - and it doesn't sound like any of those would apply either.

I'm attending our local Citizen's Police Academy, and will be visiting their driving training center and gun range in the next few weeks. Neither of those would fall into a restricted area, so I plan to carry unless told otherwise.

Some would advocate asking first, and I'm of two minds about that:
  • 1) why should we have to ask just to exercise the right we fight so hard to keep? That's what the law is for, and it's pretty clear.
    2) LEOs are worthy of our respect and we don't want to antagonize them unnecessarily.
I faced a similar situation recently when participating in a ride-along with the local PD. Nothing in their rules say anything to prohibit carrying, and nothing was said when it was setup, even though the officer setting it up new I had a CHL. My initial reaction was to carry without saying anything (#1 above), but I decided to ask the officer before we took off (#2).

Nothing was posted but after I arrived the BMW club putting on the event briefed no weapons even CHL. Maybe an agreement with HPD or insurance but it was too late.
I had no where to store weapon since my daughter was using the car on the driving course and all loose objects were to be removed from the car. I just kept my mouth shut.

What the BMW Club was saying was "Pretty please don't carry your guns" and as such, you were perfectly within your rights (and, since there was no safe way to store it otherwise) and your responsibility to keep it nice and safe on your hip. You had no legal obligation to follow their request, since the Academy is on public property and not otherwise off-limits. But, discretion being the better part of virtue, I always practice that "keeping my mouth shut" tactical maneuver whenever possible. It serves us well!

Not sure who's request it was but policy aside I will highly recommend the "Teen Street Survival School" put on twice a year by the BMWCCA club for any of your teen drivers. Its a whole day of learning emergency maneuvering and the limits of their car. Best $70 I ever spent.
